Addiction Defeated!

I am blessed, Father, to be Your child. The day ahead is full of potential and I would ask that You would enable me to use it wisely – to accomplish much and to love even more! 🙂

This past weekend I participated in clergy Ethics training with many of my fellow pastors in the United Methodist Church. I am an Ordained Elder in the Church of the Nazarene but have graciously been given the privilege by both denominations to serve as a pastor for almost 14 years. One of the workshops I attended dealt with addiction and, Lord, I am in awe (though I shouldn’t be surprised at all!) as to what You are doing! Heroin addiction is a huge problem in our society – people are dying and families are being torn apart. And for those fighting its hold, it’s not just an uphill battle – it’s a sheer vertical battle! Secular attempts at helping these poor souls are moderately successful at best but, Lord, when You are part of the equation, we just need to hang on!

The pastor of the Bucyrus UMC (OH) is being used as an instrument of change and restoration. His background in law enforcement gives him a unique blend of gifts and abilities but I for one, am so grateful that he is faithfully serving You!  His church had been running 2 services already but after a group of recovering addicts asked for more teaching he started a 3rd service to meet their needs. They are welcomed. They are loved. They are trusted. And their lives have been radically changed! This year the service’s drummer, a former addict will become his associate pastor. Next year she will become the new pastor for that service!

All glory to You, Lord! You still change lives! You still lead Your people if we will follow! Bless this pastor, bless this young lady! May they continue to impact the world for You.

Clinging

Thank You, Father, for a great day yesterday. It was a crazy day at work but you helped me get so much done. And then for giving me the opportunity to spend some quality time with Karen. Help me to use my time wisely today. Guide and direct my thoughts and actions as I prepare for Sunday.

“Cling to your faith in Christ, and keep your conscience clear.” v.19a

As I think back over my life, Lord, I can very clearly see where the words of this verse are vital to the walk of every follower of Christ. In my mind’s eye, at least, I picture clinging as more than just holding hands. It conveys the idea of wrapping my arms around You with the intent purpose of not letting go – security factors in greatly. I am to wrap my arms around my faith in You – securely, not letting go. Separating myself from You can have dire consequences! I am more apt to be attacked or tempted – with You close by, I shut down wayward thoughts the instant they pop in to my head. When You are by my side my mind has a greater tendency to follow Your direction, stating the obvious. I want to be faithful to You. I want to be guided by You. Living this way is fulfilling and when I live this way my conscience remains clear, as well.

I don’t want to leave this train of thought this morning without thinking about what happens when I stray from Your presence – when I don’t cling to my faith in You, Lord. If I start to ignore those pricks on my conscience it can lead to a very slippery slope. When I stop paying attention to Your warnings my heart can begin to harden. I can liken it to developing a callus. Over time I lose my sensitivity to areas that You want me to avoid I can allow things into my life that pull me away from You.

Lord, help me to cling to my faith and to keep my conscience clear. Amen

Let’s See What God Will Do

I’ve been fighting this all week but I feel that I need to encourage those who are reading my blog to make sure you do so tomorrow. All of us have pain and suffering in our lives and many of us question why. I surely don’t have all the answers but I know Someone who truly does. Tomorrow’s post is entitled “Why Me? Will It Ever Stop?” and it addresses those questions.  I feel there may be someone out there who needs these encouraging words and I want them to have every opportunity to be at least pointed in the right direction. Please feel free to make others aware of it and lets see what God will do. God bless!

We’ve added a couple of new features and just wanted to make sure everyone was aware of them. On the left column you now have the option of subscribing to “More than Useless”. Basically what this means is that when a new blog post gets put up, you’ll receive an email copy of it, along with links to the blog.  You may have also noticed the  “‘Like’ us on Facebook” link and if you’re on Facebook, definitely give that a click!  In addition to these, we’re also trying to set up automatic posts to Facebook, Google+ and Twitter.  We have a few bugs to work out (hence the later Facebook post yesterday!) but we will be getting there soon. So, if you have friends, kids, grandkids, acquaintances, etc. that prefer one of those other formats, be sure to let them know that we’re (soon to be) on those too! Again, thanks for your support and may your day bring glory to God! {And as always, Gig ‘Em & God Bless from Tech Support 😛 }
