Baggage

What a privilege to sit with You this morning, Father. That You would want to take time to be with me, the fact that You love me enough to do so is almost beyond comprehension. Thank You…

Hebrews 12:1 (<<click here)

“… strip off every weight that slows us down…”

Baggage…we all have this tendency to want to lug it around – at least spiritually. But why do we do that? It’s sure not something we enjoy in life! When I travel, and it’s time to move my suitcase, I sure don’t want to carry it or drag it any further than I have to. It’s heavy. It’s bulky. It’s cumbersome. It just slows me down and keeps me from experiencing my travels.

So why do I do it spiritually? Sometimes they’re not very big but I feel more comfortable having them with me – little security blankets. For example, it’s very easy for me to over analyze. Should I say this, do that, will they laugh with me or think I’m weird. Will it show I care or drive others away? Not a lot of weight but it sure slows me down.

“Unmentionables” can be a problem, too. They’re not something we want others to see but quite often they’re there. We get tangled up in them and they can cause us to fall. Addictions trip us up for sure – drugs, alcohol, porn, gambling.

“Collectibles” aren’t something we would normally take on a trip but spiritually we can make a habit of it. We can’t seem to let go of the guilt of our past – things we’ve done, things we’ve said, Lord, if we’ve asked You to forgive us then they are no longer of concern to You. Help us to cast them aside.

Lord, help us to drop the baggage. We don’t need any of it for You provide all we need.

Nobody Tellin’ Me What to Do!

Father, my mind is already rolling this morning and I need to bring it to a stop. The things of this world are nothing compared to what You have for me. I’m sorry for trekking off. Help me to give my full attention to You.

Titus 3:3 (<<click here)

It really makes no sense, Lord, that much of humanity is all about doing what we want when we want. “Ain’t gonna be nobody tellin’ me what to do!” But in reality we are all enslaved to something. We may say we are “free” to choose but all we are really doing is choosing what Master to serve. Will it be money? Or power? Or sex? Or alcohol? Or acceptance? Or religion? Yes…we may choose but what we choose ultimately puts our lives-  our minds – in bondage.

Paul says it is like it is, “Once we, too, were foolish and disobedient. We were misled and became slaves to many lusts and pleasures.” We don’t want to admit it but we have way less freedom than we think we do. Each of us is controlled by something. And most of those things are not easily set aside.

Lord, I know that what Paul writes next provides the answer to this dilemma but I want to stop here and acknowledge that I am no exception. There are things to which I have been enslaved in my past. And to this day those things call out to me, enticing me, with empty promises. I want to address it more fully later but I must speak of it now as well! Lord, without You, I am helpless – I would yield to those things in a heartbeat. Help me to stay close by Your side. Continue to help me to shoot down those thoughts before they even come close to bearing fruit. All the praise for victory goes to You!

Waist-high Pudding

pudding

Father, thank you for a good night’s rest and that You continue to help me throughout busy days. I am so grateful for this time together – it’s the best habit I’ve developed in a long time! Jesus guide me through Your word today.

Colossians 2:8-9 (<< click here)

Lord, You want this mindset not just to apply to Paul and the heresies that threatened the church in Colosse but Your desire is for me to keep my eyes on You and to study Your Word in regards to my life here and now as well.

It is so easy for us to assimilate human thoughts and mindsets into our lives. They are not always in error but they can work their way in so much so that where we at one time would not have even considered them acceptable, now – at worst – just embrace them or – at least – begin doubting why we rejected them in the past.

I feel like I’m trying to make progress through waist-high pudding – Lord, I pray for Your wisdom that I may clearly see and understand Your will. And once Your will is made clear, help me to work it out in my life as You would – strong love comes to mind, firm but not hateful, compassionate but not apathetic. Help me to be strong and courageous as well – to stand up for what is right and to stand against what is wrong. And that applies to both sides of the issue* (Here comes the pudding again!)

Side 1: this way is right / me: no, it is not

Side 1: go my way or I won’t like you / me: it is wrong but I still love you

Side 2: that way is wrong / me: yes, it is

Side 2: let’s hate and reject side 1 people / me: no that is wrong, we must love them – Jesus loves them.

Lord, You love all of us, not just those that follow You and accept Your ways. You love us but by no means do You accept our actions. Help me to be like you – to love others unconditionally but to pointedly reject actions that are opposed to Your word and Your will.
