Beware Ravenous Wolves!

Father, the last several days this 1st verse of a hymn we sang recently at church has popped into my mind.

Dear Lord and Father of mankind,
forgive our foolish ways;
reclothe us in our rightful mind,
in purer lives thy service find,
in deeper reverence, praise.
                               ~ John G. Whittier, 1872

It is fitting to share. Amen.

Matthew 7:15-20 (<<click the green)

Lord, You have admonished us to not judge but there is one very important area where we must carefully scrutinize who we are listening to, what is being communicated and the motivation that is behind it all. You warn us to “Beware of false prophets…”, individuals who come making spiritual assertions but are not spurred on by a relationship with You but are out to fill their own pockets or to stoke their own egos or to exert control over others, these are the ones that we must be on our guard against.

On the surface, things make look all well and good but just looking a little deeper makes the truth apparent. They may be “dressed as sheep but inwardly are ravenous wolves.” They are only out to feed their own selfish desires.

And this is where we must be very cautious. Quite often we are so intent on not judging that we hesitate to see their “fruit” for what it is. Lord, you make it very clear that a “good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit.”

Lord Jesus, help us to be attentive. Help us to be discerning. Help us to have no hesitation to leave bad fruit behind and go for the fruit that is good. Amen,

Full of What’s Good

Father, I am grateful that You care about me. Most every morning You gently wake me up to spend some time with You – before my day gets rolling. Some days are easier than others. This one’s a little tough. Yesterday was wonderful Your presence in both services, a very enjoyable day with Karen! But even on good days – wonderful days – my mind can tangent! Thoughts of anger, superiority, frustration, lust, gossip, selfishness, pride – they all traipse through my mind. Sin is always around the fringes of my mind, ready to trip me up, pull me down. Many times – most times – thanks to You, Father, they flit into my mind and are gone. But sometimes I linger just a little too long… forgive me, Father. Continue to fortify my defenses, help me to wield my “shield of faith” (Ephesians 6:16) as I ought to. Give me Your strength and fortitude – I fail in my weakness but I am strong in You.

Lord, what would I do without Your Word? As I shared with a friend recently what we fill our minds with affects what shows on the outside. Luke 6:45 speaks of storing up good things in our hearts. “for the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” Lord, help me to store up Your Word for as Paul says to the Thessalonians “this word continues to work in [we] who believe.” Of course, the Bible is our main tangible source but You also use devotionals and speakers. You use music. You use periodicals and blogs and Facebook posts. Help me to fill my mind with the good. And please help me to be wary of the bad in close proximity – to throw up that “shield of faith” “to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.” I am strong only in You!

Grace and Peace

grace and peace

Thank You Father, for that extra 30 minutes of light thoughts. Just the comfort of closing my eyes helped!  Let’s see what you have for me today!

Philippians 1:1-2

Grace and peace…

Grace – God’s unmerited favor to us

In Paul’s simple greeting he asks that we receive Your grace. Simple, but by no means shallow!  Where would I be without Your grace!  It is truly AMAZING!! Thank You, that You extend Your favor to me, I definitely don’t deserve it but You give it to me over and over again. When I’m good, when I’m bad, thoughtless, loving, careless, ignorant, when I fail, fall, stumble.  When I’m obedient and do what is pleasing in Your sight – You always extend Your grace! I’m grateful – help me to live out my life in gratitude.

Peace – to be complete and sound – a right relationship with God.

Not just an absence of conflict but a completeness found only in a right relationship with You. Lord, I would ask that today, no matter what comes my way, that I would have a peace in my life that can only be found and lived out in You. May the peace lived out in my life be a witness to You and bring You glory!
