I’d Rather Be a Black-eyed Susan

Good morning, Father! There is a full day ahead and I am glad that You will be with me. Give me the strength for the tasks at hand. May my thoughts be often drawn to You. Amen.

Lord, as I was thinking about some of the outdoor tasks I need to work on this fall I thought about the peonies that need to be split and replanted. As I’m writing I also noticed the lovely cluster of black-eyed Susans that we have up by the road. We have many beautiful perennials in our yard. Some bloom in the spring, some in the summer and fall.

But sitting here got me to thinking about how some of our plants grow and how that relates to how we grow in our walk with Christ. In God’s garden, I don’t think I want to be a peony. They are beautiful, yes, but as soon as they come out, inevitably a spring storm comes and the blooms are battered pretty quickly – they can’t handle what the world has to throw at them.

Also, I don’t want to be a peony because they are stuck where they are planted. Over time if they are not dug up, split and replanted they will produce fewer and fewer blooms. I don’t want my witness for Christ to suffer because I won’t move.

I would be a Black-eyed Susan though. Their stunning yellow petals and dark centers readily catch our eye. A storm in the summer or fall just keeps them well watered. Their strong stalks readily withstand strong winds. They can handle just about anything the world has to throw at them.

Also, I’d rather be a black-eyed Susan because they don’t just stay where they are planted. In fact, I probably should thin them out some in our flower beds – they are literally taking over some of them! They are quick to spread themselves abroad. What a great correlation to living lives eager to share what God has done for us

Lord, may I be like the black-eyed Susan. May Your beauty in me readily catch the eye of those around me. May I proudly stand for You regardless of what the world throws at me. And may I always be about spreading the Good News of what You have done for me. Amen.

Things of Inestimable Worth

Father, this morning I come to You with a humble and contrite heart. I am overwhelmingly blessed by You yet I still grumble and am unsatisfied with where I find myself. Far too often I take for granted things that are right before me. There are many things that I am not happy with but I neglect to cherish – to realize how much I am truly loved.

We have talked about many things in the last several months. I am sorry for complaining about situations in which You have carefully and lovingly placed me. Please forgive me for not appreciating to the fullest the beautiful things in my life.

Lord, I would ask that I would not allow minuscule, insignificant things in my life to taint my entire mindset that I would let them roll right over me to be remembered no more.

Please enable me to grasp those things, small though they may be, that in the setting of Your great love for me I wouldn’t let them pass me by. That I would hold them close, that I would embrace them, savoring them for the great value they hold – a child’s laugh, an older couple holding hands, the day-in-day-out way’s my wife shows her love for me – and the many little things of inestimable worth.

And most of all, most importantly of all, Lord, may I never, ever, forget all that You are to me. Your patience, Your grace, Your love, Your blessings upon me. Your sacrifice, the pain You took upon Yourself in my stead, may I remember every day…You are the reason I am here. You are my reason for living. May I never take You for granted.

Proclaim Your Glory

Father, thank You for the blessing of where we live. Out in the country we get the privilege of seeing an abundance of Your beautiful creation. Over the weekend I saw a doe and her fawn out in the glade back behind the house. The little one was so full of life, zipping here and there. We love catching glimpses of the baby bunny around the flower beds. And even though some find them a bit gruesome, I was fascinated watching a leech as it moved through the water of the ditch I was clearing on our lot. The diversity of Your creation in our small corner of the world is wonderful. Its beauty is amazing. Hummingbirds, turkeys, cardinals, wrens and hawks, as well as our regular murder of crows are entertaining to behold. Honeysuckle, coneflower, black-eyed Susan, hostas, ferns and basket weave are just a few of the abundant floral displays proclaiming Your glory!

Praise Your holy name. All praise to our mighty Creator!

Psalm 8

O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth!
Your glory is higher than the heavens.
You have taught children and infants
        to tell of your strength,
    silencing your enemies
        and all who oppose you.

When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers—
the moon and the stars you set in place—
what are mere mortals that you should think about them,
human beings that you should care for them?
Yet you made them only a little lower than God
and crowned them with glory and honor.
You gave them charge of everything you made,
putting all things under their authority—
    the flocks and the herds
        and all the wild animals,
the birds in the sky, the fish in the sea,
and everything that swims the ocean currents.

O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth!
