Seeing Through the Layers

Father, thank You for a productive and enjoyable day with Karen yesterday. Thank You for Your watch care over us. Thank You for our relationship. I am truly blessed! Bless her this day, Father, and help me to love her more and more each day.

1 Thessalonians 5:20-22 (<<click here)

Lord, this is a good reminder from Paul. Lots of things are proclaimed in my world. Some are obviously true and some are blatantly false. The challenge comes with those things that are in between – things that are not so clearly black and white. I am so grateful that You are there to help me to discern what is good and what is evil. Help me to listen to Your direction. Our natural tendency is to just go with the flow – we don’t wait to stick out – we want everyone to like us. Just because good people around us accept something or someone as good doesn’t mean that that is the case. And sometimes good people reject something or someone because they label them as evil and unfortunately the “love” factor is totally rejected as well. Again, Lord, I ask for discernment. Sometimes the crowd is right but sometimes Your desire is for us to see through the layers. Many wear masks – in both the realms of good and evil. Help me to see through the duplicity of some who claim to be good but who are hiding things detrimental to Your kingdom. Then help me to read between the lines, to hear between the words to see under the layers of protection to see those that many would just write off as useless. God is at the core – help me not to miss it. Help me not to just reject them because they don’t measure up to acceptable norms.

Straddling the Fence

Father, You woke me up a little earlier than normal this morning. I am eager to see what You have for me. Help me to be attentive – I don’t want to miss a thing.

1 John 5:6-12 (<<click here)

11And this is what God has testified: He has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.12Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have God’s Son does not have life.

Many of us like to straddle the fence – we like to keep all of our options open. But with You, Lord, we have to choose. We are either in or we are out – there is no straddling. Having You gives us eternal life, not having You does not – no gray, just a very clear black or white.

But that surely goes against the grain of our societal mindset. We proudly view ourselves as inclusive – no one left out, no one excluded. Everybody’s happy…right? Uh…no. Lots of room for gray and straddling – no room for black and white and absolutes.

One major point to drive home – Lord, You are the originator of inclusivity. The gift of eternal life is extended to everyone – not some, not a few – every one. Not a single person is excluded by You. But we can exclude ourselves. We are not mindless slaves or puppets or robots. We have also been given the gift of free will. Everyone is included but we can choose to be excluded. We can choose to not abide by the rules but we cannot change the rules.

Lord, help me to be all-inclusive in my love as You are but may I always be clear on which side of the fence I stand. I…choose…You.

Chisel Tip RED Sharpie Permanent Marker!

Father, this day has already had far too many distractions – nothing evil but “things” of non-importance. Help me to redeem the rest of my day. Help me to invest my time wisely – at home, while helping family, at work – wherever I may be, may You guide my thoughts and actions.

Hebrews 9:16-28 (<<click here)

As I’ve said before, Lord, the book of Hebrews is a challenge to get through – there’s just a lot to wrap my mind around. In thinking through this morning’s passage the author once again speaks of what You did in giving of Yourself so we can be forgiven…and he places Your actions in contrast to the old covenants sacrificial system of the Law.

So as I processed these things in my mind popped the image of a bold sharpie marker. I see the law written out, in great detail, with an extra fine point Sharpie permanent marker – it is written black on a stark white background. The contrast is great – there are no grey areas – everything is black and white.

Breaking this Law is sin and as Romans 3:23 tells us “everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.” Black and white – no grey. The Law’s remedy for sin is sacrifice specific animals, specific time frames, and specific directions, specific upon specific – black and white – no grey.

Then You came on the scene Jesus – not to throw out the Law but to fulfill it in its entirety. And over all that extra fine point detail in black Sharpie permanent marker You are a chisel tip RED Sharpie permanent marker! In all inclusive broad strokes of redemption you have come boldly to be the final Word. You alone are Lord and Savior. Everything falls before You! Everything is complete in You! Praise Your holy name for ever and ever! Amen!!
