Work of the Faithful

Father, thank you for a good night’s sleep. As I humbly come into Your presence I am acutely aware of my shortcomings. The Great Deceiver popped off a few rounds and I was hit. My “shield of faith”(Ephesians 6:16) dropped. I come before You asking for Your forgiveness and for the fortitude in standing strong against future assaults. Even when I stumble You are there to lift me up and set me on the narrow way once more. Praise Your holy Name – thank You for Your mercy and grace!

Lord, I am extremely grateful for the churches I have the privilege of serving. Verses 2 & 3 of this passage, communicate a lot of how I feel being a pastor. I have wonderful people with which to walk this journey and I am thankful for them and their companionship. Living on this old earth we all need lots of prayer to keep us strong and get us through each day. I pray for them and I know many pray for me. When I pray, I “think of [their] faithful work.” Over the years we have consistently supported local ministries to help the needy, we’ve gotten behind impacting faith-based films in our local community (FIREPROOF and COURAGEOUS) and been there for evangelistic events in our surrounding area (Will Graham Celebration). We pray for many people, both those close to our hearts and those we may not know – lifting up those ravaged by disease, those struggling with relationships and those struggling with the many spiritual issues in their lives. Their “loving deeds” include meals for the bereaved, letters of encouragement to those who are sick or recovering from procedures, “cheer” plates of goodies encouraging those unable to get out to church any longer, as well as, weekly contact with bulletins and CD recording of our services Lord, thank You for such loving caring people with which to serve!

And Lord we thank You for the “enduring love” You have given us. No matter what trial we may have to endure, no matter what losses we may suffer – You are there to sustain us through it all. Thank You for Your love and care!

We Need Each Other

Father, Your love for me is more than my finite mind grasp! Thinking of the love between a parent and a child, which in many cases is one of the strongest loves on earth, hardly compares. Of course familial love is a reflection of Your love for us but Your love is so much deeper and far wider. Over and over again we let You down but You never fail to forgive. We hurt You in our disobedience but Your love is a constant! “Amazing Love! How can it be…?” Praise Your Holy Name!

Lord, we always seem to see Paul as one of Your most stalwart followers – strong in his convictions, an individual that we could count on, one we could go to for encouragement and support. He may have consistently emulated You to the world but he was not You – he was only human as am I.

The phrase, “Timothy, please come as soon as you can,” reflects very clearly his humanity. He is weary. He is lonely…and he yearns for Timothy’s companionship – his love, his encouragement, his presence.

Lord, You have created us first of all to need You. You fill the hole in our lives that absolutely nothing else will fill. No matter how hard we work at shoving other things in… But, Jesus, you have also created us to need each other. You are not inhibited by space or time but we surely are. Help me to be the encouragement that I need to be to my family, my friends, my congregants, my fellow workers, any customers and even total stranger who come across my path. I cannot be in all places at all times, as You, but use me to do what I can with Your help and directions. Amen.

Ripples

It is difficult to focus this morning, Father. Learning of the death of a close friend is shocking to say the least. I pray that Your children will reach out to his family and friends during this difficult time. Continue to use his life to touch many other lives even in his death He was truly a faithful servant of Yours and will be missed.

“Enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts.”

Lord, I really need to share a little more in regards to Scott’s passing. This passage of scripture says a lot about our relationship. I have never claimed to be perfect – I stumble and fall and struggle. I am a real person. I feel Scott was the same way. He loved You with all of who he was. He was no more perfect than I but he called on You with a pure heart. In his service as an Army chaplain he touched innumerable lives. I’m sure he impacted many who may have never heard of You but because of Your call on Scott’s life, blemishes and all, they were shown what a true man of God looked like.

I continue to be amazed, Lord, how You can take the little that we have to offer – imperfect though it may be – and can use it the way you do Though many still resist the truth of who You are, You still touch and move us. Your love will forever motivate us.

Lord, I pray that Scott’s impact will carry on like ripples in the water. That the lives he touched, mine included, will continue to be reminded of what You meant to him and that we in turn will pass Your love along. May the ripples continue.
