I Cannot Sanctify Myself

Father, as I look ahead to the next several days I would ask for Your watch care over my family. Keep us safe and keep us in the center of Your will. Help us to love each other and to make the most of our time together. Help me to keep my heart fixed upon You – to be motivated by what You would do. Help me to be a true reflection of You in all I say and do.

1 Thessalonians 5:23-28 (<<click here)

Lord, me being holy (my sanctification) is wholly dependent upon You. I cannot sanctify myself. Some days it feels as though I can barely keep myself pointed in the right direction. All I can really do is to totally (spirit, soul, and body) give myself over to You. You have given me a free will and I willingly give my life over to You. Who but the creator of me would know best. You alone know what is now (in its entirety) and what will be (in all its possibilities).

Again, Lord, Paul refers to You as “the God of peace” and again, from the many experiences in my life, I know most assuredly that true peace is found only in You. Any peace I can generate is short lived – and probably even that little bit rightly must be attributed to You.

Only You can make me holy. Only you keep me blameless in my entirety (spirit, soul, and body). Only You “will make this happen” for You call me and You are faithful. You are my everything. I find completion only in You. Help me to be all You want me to be! Help me to live my life to the fullest – fulfilling Your call with every breath!  Amen – so be it!

Beauty in the Dreariness

This morning as I look out my office window, Father, I think of You as my great Creator God. Yes, it is towards the end of February in Ohio. The trees are barren except for the last of the beech tree leaves clinging brown to their branches. The grass is a green of sorts but with patches of earth tones (and earth as well) throughout. Clouds rule this day and waves of light rain continue to fall. It may seem lifeless and dreary from a human perspective but it is nothing of the sort!

Each tree is readying itself to burst forth with life. Even now many in our area are harvesting the running sap from sugar maples and syrup will soon be the result. Our warm “winter” has already caused daffodils and crocuses to begin to push through the earth. Our noses aren’t overly pleased but our healthy population of skunks has been scurrying about for a couple of weeks now. The rain continues to fill ponds that were beginning to get low. Aquifers are being rejuvenated.

Life is everywhere; it’s just a little less obvious. It is not dreary; it is vibrant! The world is just shrouded in its winter cloak biding its time until God calls it to shed its covering and amazingly come into view.

Lord, You have created a beautiful, intricately designed world! Each piece meshed perfectly with the others – each tree unique, each creature different in some way, even within a given species. “Everything is beautiful in its own way,” as Ray Stevens used to sing.

“But ask the animals, and they will teach you,
    or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you;
or speak to the earth, and it will teach you,
or let the fish in the sea inform you.
Which of all these does not know
that the hand of the Lord has done this?
In his hand is the life of every creature
and the breath of all mankind.”
Job 12:7-10

May I see the world for what it is. It is now beautiful in its own way but it will soon shine forth in even more dazzling beauty. Each season has its offering, may I savor each for the bounty it has to offer. Amen!

Children of the King!

Father, I’m so glad we have the quiet of this morning together. Before the day gets rolling and many things and people and noises start overtaking me, I am Yours alone. Bless our time together.

Hebrews 13:20-21 (<<click here)

One of our many shortcomings, Lord, is not truly grasping that You, the almighty Creator of the universe, extend Your might and resources to each and every one of us. We mope around as beggar children as if we have no choice but to go it alone with empty hands and pockets.

We may live that way but reality refuses that lifestyle. Today’s passage is one of many that stands boldly before us proclaiming Your power – being raised from the dead – and how out of Your abundance You wait to equip us with all we need for doing your will.

Lord, we are not paupers; we are children of the King! We are not defenseless before the powers of this world, both seen and unseen, but we are led by a mighty Warrior whom nothing has and nothing ever will defeat. You have conquered sin and death!

May we live our lives in Your power! “All glory to You forever and ever! Amen!”

Angles in Their Place

Thank You, Father, for enabling me to get as much as I got done yesterday. It was a struggle not being able to concentrate and then feeling nauseous. I only got stuff done with Your help.

Hebrews 1:5-14 (<<click here)

Lord, I am grateful for Your provision and a portion of what You have provided is Your holy angels to help us along our way. They work alongside us to accomplish Your will. They are a great asset but Your Word clearly states that we are top dog of Your creation. We are the recipients of salvation because of Your awesome sacrifice – only because of You can we stand in Your presence. And You, Lord, stand above us all. You are God!

And that is how it should be but we, the created, like to think of ourselves too highly and put emphasis where it doesn’t belong. We lift up and worship creation in lieu of the Creator. The recipients of this letter of Hebrews did just that and the author very succinctly shows them, from scripture, the error of their ways.

Even in our culture we have a tendency to place a little too much emphasis on angels. They are powerful and beautiful creatures. But our fixation borders on worship and that is a line not meant to be crossed. They are created beings made to serve and worship You. You also use them to minister to us. Help us to keep things balance as You intended. You are sovereign. You are Lord. Praise Your holy name!
