“It Is Finished”

Father, as I continue to read through my prayer book quite often I have to re-read the previous days. My heart, soul, and mind have to marinate a bit. 🙂 Here is a portion from yesterday’s reading that has given me much cause to think:

O God the Holy Spirit…
Lead me to the cross…
Help me to find in [Christ’s] death the reality and
    immensity of his love.
Open for me the wondrous volumes of truth in his,
    ‘It is finished.’

Lord Jesus, that last line just catches me! I can think a little into it but I struggle to wrap my mind around it. It most certainly is not something I can do with little effort.

‘It is finished,’ of course are Your last recorded words prior to Your death on the cross. John 19:30

The most obvious question is what is finished? This is what comes to mind:

  • The task You had come to earth to accomplish – the giving of Yourself in a once-and-for-all payment for the sins of all of humanity.
  • Death- until Your return we have to experience it but it is defeated – it no longer has the final word – You do
  • Sin – again we must still contend with it every day of our lives but because of Your victory and because Your Holy Spirit lives within us, we can now defeat it in Your strength and power

Evil for Evil…NOT!

I lay this day in its entirety in Your hands, Father. There are many elements in it that are unknown. Some are beyond my control. I trust You. May You receive glory whatever the outcome. Use me however You deem best. Fill me with Your love. May I be gracious but may I also stand for what is right. If need be may I be discerning enough to know when I need to fight or submit. Please guide me according to Your will. Amen. So be it!

“no…evil for evil” “do good”

Lord, this is really a very simple concept but is definitely counter culture! Our knee jerk reaction is to respond in like manner – you hurt me, I hurt you! (worse if possible!) But that reaction is totally, without question not You. You, the Creator of all that is, almighty (emphasis on the all) God have every reason to punish Your rebellious (putting it very mildly) creation. And pointedly our punishment is death and rightly so. The Bible is replete with accounts where Your punishment was meted out and in every instance it was justified. But also in every instance punishment was preceded by innumerable attempts at reconciliation! You’re patient and oh so longsuffering. Thank You for Your unsurmountable love!

Ultimately You came to teach us and love us face to face and our response was to return evil for love, ultimately nailing You to a cross… Reason for retaliation? Definitely! But did You? No!! You’re the very epitome of LOVE!  Evil… for evil is not even an option!

Lord, help me to overcome my tendencies to give evil for evil. I am not a vengeful person but I do have a temper and only You can help me temper that temper. May every molecule of my being radiate Your love! May it control my actions and my words in every situation, no matter how difficult. Lord, make me an instrument of Your peace. Enable me to “do good to all people.” With Your power and wisdom and love, I can do it!

Sand Off the Edges

Father, You deserve all my praise and adoration. Though life can get complicated with all of our diverse personalities interacting with one another, we can find, in You, a solid place on which to stand. Thank you, father, for who You are and that I can rely on You.

Colossians 1:15-23 (<<click here)

Lord, You are supreme. You know me through and through for You made me. You knew me before the world was created and You loved me (Ephesians 1:4) You came to live on this earth, so I (we) could be reconciled to God through You, that is Your sacrifice in giving Your life on the cross, took care of the sin that kept me from having a right relation with You. We made a mess that we were incapable of cleaning up – but we are the ones who drove the wedge between ourselves and Yourself. You, because You love us, took care of it at great cost to Yourself. We broke our relationship with You, we cut ourselves off from You, we thumbed our noses at You, we severed the link. You re-established the connection AND to beat all, in Your eyes – it’s hard for us to grasp – it’s like it never ever happened. No probationary period, no test to past, no earning back our status. Instead You bring us into Your very presence. You who are holy made us holy and if we have accepted the fact and believe in who You are and what You’ve done for us, we are “blameless as [we] stand before [You]without a single fault.” vs.22b

I’ve heard the concept 100’s of times in my life but I sit here in awe once again, as my mind tries to grasp it all. And to think You went forward with my creation knowing that all of this would have to take place to set things straight. All of this! I deserve nothing at best and yet You freely give me everything and our relationship is as if nothing ever came between us, on Your part no hesitation, no doubt, no holding back. Thank You is nowhere sufficient.

Lord, help me to live my life with what You have done for me at the forefront. Help my gratitude to be palpable! May it influence everything! How dare I harbor anger or begrudge anyone for what I perceive as a slight against me, my loved ones or my beliefs! Forgive me, Lord, for consistently doing so!

I pray Lord that You will continue sanding off all the rough edges of my being. Please make me into what I was created to be. Amen!
