Going After God’s Heart

Good morning, Father! Thank You for so many things – my wonderful wife, my exceptional son, a job that more than adequately meets my needs, a beautiful home, two churches that You have blessed me with to serve, a world of diverse variety in which to live – and my mind goes on and on! But, Father, most importantly thank You for Your love for me! For my salvation sure and free, for the awesome (and this is where this word truly fits!) sacrifice You made to make it possible for me to love You back! All praise and glory and honor to You, O God!

“…set your sights on the realities of heaven…” v.1b

“Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” Matthew 6:10

“Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth.” v.2

Lord, I have much in this world for which to be grateful – but in reality, all of it is temporal. In the blink of an eye, it could all be gone…or I could be gone. There is nothing here that is forever. Only what You are involved with is eternal. When I step free from the clutches of this world nothing that I cling to here will be anything – it will all be as nothing. The only things that will remain are my relationships – my relationship with You (may it grow every day) and my relationship with others that are based on You! But even those relationships will be different – deeper, fuller, richer!

Help me to be a “man after your own heart” (1 Samuel 13:14Acts 13:22) and in that frame of mind to be forever seeking to establish your kingdom here on earth. May I be always striving to bring others into a closer relationship with You, Lord, so that they and I will be investing in what is truly worthy of our time and energies.

Deep Love

Father, I pray that You would strengthen me and my resolve. Yesterday, I touched on our time together but other things lured me away. Not that they were evil things but our time together is of utmost importance. Help me to get up when I need to and for You to be the first thing on my agenda. Amen.

James 1:22-25 (<<click here)

Lord, we’ve been in a relationship for some time now. You have always (literally!) loved me and for a majority of my life, I have loved You. I’ve loved You but at varying degrees. As a child, it was simple and pure. As a teen, it was real but other things began to vie for that love. As I continue to grow and mature into adulthood, my love has been tested…and sometimes I have failed. My love has been thin and many times insubstantial. But You have never given up on me.

And because of Your commitment, because of the depth of your love… I am where I am today. My love is deeper than it has ever been, though it is by no means as deep as it can go. Help me, Lord, to go deeper still. As the old hymn puts it, “Deeper, deeper in the love of Jesus daily let me go…”

A big part of that love is immersing myself in Your love letters to me – Your Word the Bible. It is challenging, it is applicable to my everyday life even though it is thousands of years old. But as today’s passage stresses, I can’t just “listen” to it, I “must do what it says.” To truly be effective in my life I must allow it to affect my “behavior and attitudes,” as the notes in my Study Bible* point out.

I know it does. I feel Your presence, Holy Spirit, and You regularly bring to mind Your Word. May I continue to listen and may I continue to do what it says. Amen!

Built on Rock

Today is the beginning of a new year (For me at least!) So Father, I would ask for Your help in making this a year in which we grow closer together. I realize that You are putting forth Your all. I would ask that You would enable me to give You every part of everyday – guide me. Help me to listen and act according to Your will. There is no better way!

Titus 1:9 (<<click here)

Lord, I am so grateful for the solid foundations that You have given me to build my life upon. You of course, are the rock upon which everything else is built. Because of the wonderful gift of salvation, You have extended, I am who I am today – praise Your holy name!

I have every reason to have “a strong belief in the trustworthy message”– that is the Good News of the forgiveness of sins because of Your sacrifice.

As I continue to prepare for the awesome responsibility of leading Your children, please guide my thoughts, fill my heart with Your love and continue to draw me deeper into fellowship with You. May I be the encourager that I need to be and may I show those who don’t believe in You the error of their ways in a loving manner. Enable me to be like You when I interact with those around me wherever I may be.

Prayer Struggle

Father, You have blessed me with so many wonderful things, family being one of them I am so grateful to have people in my life who love me and care for me. And I am also grateful that I can love and care for them as well. We are blessed to have each other. We accept each other (for the most part) for who we are – warts and all. Thank You for Your wonderful blessing of family.

2 Thessalonians 1:11-12 (<<click here)

Lord, no matter which way we look at it prayer is foundational in our daily walk with You – or at least it most certainly should be! I must confess I struggle to pray. If You would have me evaluate myself, the place where I have the most opportunity for growth and improvement would be my prayer life. I have made some headway in latter months but I know I can go much deeper and wider in my intimate interaction with You. I realize prayer is more than “grace” before meals and praying from the pulpit. These are very important, as well, but if my personal prayer life isn’t what it should be every aspect of my life is inhibited.

How can I effectively pray asking You to “enable [others] to live a life worthy of [You] all.” v11a if I struggle with prayer? I can only be more effective by persevering. I cannot give up! I benefit myself and others by that perseverance.

Help me, Lord, to do so that You will give me the “power to accomplish all the good things [our] faith prompts [us and others] to do.” v11b Then only because of Your grace in our lives will Your name “be honored because of the way [we] live…” v12a

Lord, help me to be drawn to You throughout the moments of my day.
