Live It Out

Father, it is very quiet this morning and for so little happening in the half hour, I’ve been up, my mind is darting here and there. Help me to focus on You – not the weather, not the work day ahead, not even church tomorrow. May I focus on You and our relationship and what You would have me hear today.

1 Peter 3:1-6 (<<click here)

Lord, when it comes right down to it our relationship with You is what is most important. Sharing our faith is important but if our relationship with You is wishy-washy how effective will we be? So many times all of our emphasis seems to be on the external when again the internal is of utmost importance.

In this passage, Peter was speaking directly to women. In the culture in which they lived, men, by far, held the dominant role. They were in charge – women had no say. So Peter’s advice to women who came to saving faith in Christ was to live it out. Harping, preaching, nagging, brow beating would only result in problems. Living out “godly lives” would “speak… without any words.” By cultivating their relationship with You, Lord, wives could “win over” their husbands when the husbands observed their “pure and reverent lives.”

Lord, that is sound advice for us all. It seems that many in our culture are becoming more and more intolerant of any reference to You, Jesus. In many situations harping, preaching, nagging and brow beating only results in problems. But a life wholly devoted to You, one in which our goal is to emulate You in every aspect of our lives – that speaks volumes. “Without any words” we are able to proclaim the difference that You make in our lives.

Lord, enable me to “win over” those around me as they observe my “pure and reverent” life. Amen.

For Those Who Come Behind Us

What a privilege, Father, to come together with You. As I looked out the window this morning the fog is fairly thick and my mind doesn’t feel much different. Lack of sleep from sitting with the family of a dying man the night before last has impacted me…but them even more so. Father, may they feel Your presence as their grief weighs heavy upon them this day. May they find Your peace as we all cling to the certain hope of being reunited with him and all our loved ones who have gone before us into Your presence. Amen.

Lord, as I sit here rocking and praying, You bring to mind a question: What kind of legacy will we leave behind when we are gone?

Wayne left an exemplary one. He was faithful to You, he was a loving father and husband, he was a hardworking man of integrity, he was a devoted servant of the Church. He was no more perfect than any of us but in the almost 14 years I knew him, I really don’t recall anyone speaking ill of him.

Lord, when our lives are built on You – when You are our model to live our life in fulfilling Your will – when You are our model for life – others can look at us and be inspired to live likewise.

Once more, a wonderful song by Steve Green comes to mind…

♪♫♪ Find Us Faithful ♫♪♫

We’re pilgrims on the journey
Of the narrow road
And those who’ve gone before us line the way
Cheering on the faithful, encouraging the weary
Their lives a stirring testament to God’s sustaining grace

Surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses
Let us run the race not only for the prize
But as those who’ve gone before us
Let us leave to those behind us
The heritage of faithfulness
Passed on through godly lives

Oh may all who come behind us find us faithful
May the fire of our devotion light their way
May the footprints that we leave
Lead them to believe
And the lives we live inspire them to obey
Oh may all who come behind us find us faithful

After all our hopes and dreams have come and gone
And our children sift through all we’ve left behind
May the clues that they discover
And the memories they uncover
Become the light that leads them
To the road we each must find

[Repeat Chorus Twice]

Oh may all who come behind us find us faithful
Oh may all who come behind us find us faithful

That’s a Wrap

Father, today is Your day – and not just because it is the Sabbath. If I am to be victorious in living my life for You, every day must be Your day. I must keep my eyes focused on You. Help me, Father, to do so.

2 Timothy 4:19-22 (<<click here)

And for Paul, that’s a wrap. No more letters. No more missionary journeys. From his life-changing encounter with You, Lord, on the road to Damascus, his life in its entirety was devoted to You. As he writes the final lines in his final letter, he looks briefly back remembering some whom had traveled with him, and prayed with him and had supported and worked alongside him. He had diligently worked to spread the Gospel far and wide and had strived to assure that it would not die with him but through the lives of people, like Timothy, would continue to impact the world.

Lord, what an example! Paul held nothing back and due in part to his tenacity the Good News of the Gospel continues to effect lives today. You were able to use Paul during his lifetime and You continue to impact the world with the words inspirationally given to him.

I am no Paul, Lord, but I give myself to You to use as You will. Help me to listen and when I have heard, may I act. And when I act may I do so with wisdom and courage so that I, too, may proclaim Your word to a world that truly needs Your Good News!
