May I Be Less

A full and busy day it surely has been, Father. Thank You for enabling me to accomplish as much as I did. Thank You for being with Karen, touch her, please. May our time together be productive. Amen.

Matthew 15:15-20 (<<click the green)

As we saw yesterday, Lord, You have the uttermost love for the lost and zero patience for those who should know better…but Your disciples? They fell somewhere in the middle. They were surely teachable but they were slow enough to catch on that the Amplified Bible has You asking Peter in verse 16, “Are you still so dull [and unable to put things together]?”

The disciples had been with You well over two years and yet they still weren’t getting it! I know that quite often I am one to second guess myself on things rather than be wrong. It’s how I’ve trained myself to respond. I’m a relatively intelligent individual but I always feel better if I make sure that my assumptions are correct.

Regardless of whether this had been Peter’s thinking or not, You go on to answer his question and I ‘m sure he was speaking for the lot of them. What we ingest goes in and comes out, plain and simple. But what we say? What we say springs “from the heart – that’s what defiles [us].”

Eating “wrong” things, at “wrong” times with unwashed hands has no impact whatsoever. You go on to say, “For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander. These are what defile you.”

Outside influences may fuel the fire but every single one of us is born with that flame already lit and glowing – and that flame is sin. We may expand our repertoire with things we hear and see but at the core of it all, there is no one to blame but ourselves. And there is no way to extinguish that flame – no way to eradicate that sin – than to trust in the gift of salvation offered by You and You alone.

Lord Jesus, may we fall at Your feet in repentance. May we joyfully accept Your payment for our sins. Fill us with Your presence that we may be victorious in our daily walk. May I be less so that You can be more. Amen.

Penalty Paid!

The Cross by Ron DiCianniPenal

Father, at the beginning of another week, I do not want to go about my life randomly. I want to purposely – conscientiously – place myself into Your more than capable hands. I humbly give myself over to You – use me as You will. Amen.

Matthew 9:1-8 (<<click the green)

I don’t own a copy but I just love the Amplified Bible and thanks to biblegateway.com it is readily a part of my studies!

Lord, in this passage, when You said to the paralyzed man, “…your sins are forgiven” the Amplified Bible does what it does by saying “[the penalty is paid, the guilt removed, and you are declared to be in right standing with God].” That is most assuredly what forgiveness is and I know that is the case but having it right before my eyes brings me great joy! A paid penalty, removed guilt and in right standing with God – now that’s what’s it’s all about!!!

And when the teachers of the religious law got their dander up – one of their many “how dare You” moments! – You go straight to the heart of the matter and ask, “…which is easier, to say ’Your sins are forgiven and the penalty paid,’ or to say ‘Get up and walk’?” Again it is amplified by stating, [Both are possible for God; both are impossible for man.]

Many in the world today still balk at the reality of Your being God. In doing so, we continue to “think evil in [our] hearts”. Over and over and over again it is proven to us that You are who You are. Many throughout the millennia have attempted to disprove Your claims and many in their determination to do so have proven Your claims for they are undeniably true! Lord Jesus, You alone have the power and authority to forgive and to heal! For that matter, forgiveness is spiritual healing that we all need!

Thank You, Lord, for Your healing touch of our souls! Only because of Your sacrifice is the penalty paid, the guilt removed and are we able to be in right standing with God! All praise to God, our Creator, and Savior!

Lurking Evil

It is bright and early, Father, but yesterday just didn’t come together. Speak to me this morning and may I hang on to every word. Amen.

Matthew 8:28-34 (<<click the green)

This particular passage brings a very interesting story in Your life, Lord. Two men, desperately in need of a supernatural intervention, found it in You. They were miraculously released from an oppressive spiritual bondage that I truly believe is still very much a reality today.

Today’s society laughs it off as a legend kind of thing but I am convinced that a lot of the evil we find in our world is because we have delved so deeply into evil, we have revelled in it, we have immersed ourselves in it so that connections are readily accessible for demonic influence in our lives. And it is truly no laughing matter.

A few years while working at Kohl’s there was a family present that had a little girl with them. She couldn’t have been more than three. I didn’t work with them but something had transpired that had set the girl off! She was literally raging with anger and I truly believe that it was not just a toddler’s temper tantrum. Her level of rage went far beyond what any three-year-old could come up with on their own. It was disturbing, to say the least! The only thing that made any sense to me was that she was possessed. The family quickly left the building and to my knowledge, I have never seen them again. I can only imagine what she, and all those around her, was going through!

Lord, You saw these two men and You knew what they were going through. The demons in them knew who You were, too. It is not recorded that You even said anything but we can tell that the demons were terrified finding themselves in Your presence, begging to be cast out of the men and into a “large herd of pigs feeding in the distance.” And at Your command that is exactly what happened. When “the demons came out of the men and entered the pigs… the whole herd plunged down the steep hillside into the lake and drowned in the water.”

Lord, there is more in this account to write about but that will be for later. Right now I would sincerely pray that You would open our eyes. Help us to see what we are exposing ourselves to. The lurking evil that we consume regularly as “entertainment” is adversely affecting us far more than we are willing to acknowledge. Lord, have mercy on us. Touch us. Free us. Amen!

Keep a Strong Grip

It’s taken me a bit to get to this point this morning, Father, but I am ready to hear what You have for me. Help me to focus, giving You my attention.

2 Thessalonians 2:1-17 (<<click here)

Lord, I know it’s just a matter of time until You return. Your word is clear…it’s not an “if” but a “when.” As I cast my eyes over the landscape of this world evil is truly rampant – sin and all of its repercussions are in every quadrant. It may be winning millions of skirmishes but its defeat is ultimately inevitable. It’s difficult to grasp the fact that it can get any worse – but it will. Many spend an exuberant amount of time trying to figure out all the particulars but all I need to know is that it will get worse but evil will not have the final say!

Lord, help me to live out Pauls’ exhortation to “stand firm” and to “keep a strong grip on the teaching” I have received from You and from the followers after Your own heart. And I would ask that my overarching motivation would be the assurance that Your love and grace gives me – not temporary – but eternal comfort and a wonderful hope.” And may that assurance “comfort…and strengthen [me] in every good thing [I] do and say.” Thank You, Jesus, for all You are to me.

Seeing Through the Layers

Father, thank You for a productive and enjoyable day with Karen yesterday. Thank You for Your watch care over us. Thank You for our relationship. I am truly blessed! Bless her this day, Father, and help me to love her more and more each day.

1 Thessalonians 5:20-22 (<<click here)

Lord, this is a good reminder from Paul. Lots of things are proclaimed in my world. Some are obviously true and some are blatantly false. The challenge comes with those things that are in between – things that are not so clearly black and white. I am so grateful that You are there to help me to discern what is good and what is evil. Help me to listen to Your direction. Our natural tendency is to just go with the flow – we don’t wait to stick out – we want everyone to like us. Just because good people around us accept something or someone as good doesn’t mean that that is the case. And sometimes good people reject something or someone because they label them as evil and unfortunately the “love” factor is totally rejected as well. Again, Lord, I ask for discernment. Sometimes the crowd is right but sometimes Your desire is for us to see through the layers. Many wear masks – in both the realms of good and evil. Help me to see through the duplicity of some who claim to be good but who are hiding things detrimental to Your kingdom. Then help me to read between the lines, to hear between the words to see under the layers of protection to see those that many would just write off as useless. God is at the core – help me not to miss it. Help me not to just reject them because they don’t measure up to acceptable norms.
