I Have Issues!

Father, as this day begins, I want to consciously hand it over to You. You have truly – miraculously – changed many things in me for the better. But we both know that You are not finished with me. Father, please help me be the person You want me to be. My brain cannot process all the why’s in regards to my anger issues but Father, You and I know they need to be dealt with! I am incapable of dealing with them but, Father, You are not! Help me address them and help me to love others as You do. Amen.

Lord, it was difficult writing out today’s prayer. None of us like to announce, “I have issues!” But as Paul proclaims in v.15, “This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it: ‘Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners’- and I am the worst of them all.” And I like Paul, can say, “But God had mercy on me…” v.16a

I am, by no means, perfect. I truly strive to be obedient to Your call on my life as a follower of You, Lord. But it is no secret that I fail. I say things I shouldn’t say – hurtful things. I do things I shouldn’t do – my anger spews forth and I don’t stop it. I think things unbecoming a child of God – perverse things, hateful things. “But God had mercy on me so that Christ Jesus could use me as a prime example of his great patience with even the worst sinners. Then others will realize that they, too, can believe in him and receive eternal life.” v.16

“Great patience…” O, Lord, where would I be without Your “great patience.” Once again I join Paul in proclaiming “All honor and glory to God forever and ever!… Amen.” v.17

Without You, I would surely be lost. Only because of You am I found. Yes, I most assuredly have a multitude of things to work on but, thanks be to God, I’m not on my own! Lord, You are with me, You love me more than I will ever truly comprehend on this side of eternity and You, the Creator of all that is, You want me to succeed! I will be victorious!…but only because of You. Amen!

I Can Do Whatever You Call Me to Do

Thank You for another day, Father. I most certainly was not perfect today but feeling Your presence alongside me helped me to make many right choices. I am grateful that You continue to work with me.

Matthew 3:13-17 (<<click the green)

I think we’ve all struggled with feeling that we weren’t qualified to shoulder some responsibility that was set before us in our past. Many times we’ve taken up the task at hand and maybe some of have lingering doubts that we made the right decision in not doing so.

In today’s passage, we find John diligently proclaiming the coming of the long-expected Messiah. The Old Testament “prophet Isaiah was speaking about John when he said,

“He is a voice shouting in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord’s coming!
Clear the road for him!’”
(Matthew 3:3)

John had cleared the way and here came Jesus – the Messiah!

I’m sure John was grateful that he had obeyed God’s calling on his life – it was a big task. It was a hard task. But with God’s help, he had done the right thing and doing it with the best of his ability.

Then Jesus asked John to baptize him.

“What?! Wait a minute! I am the one who needs to be baptized by you…” But when Jesus replied, “It should be done, for we must carry out all that God requires”, John readily complied.

It was a big request, but John was obedient.

Lord, sometimes You call us to things that we think are beyond what we are capable of…but You know best. You do not call us to fail but to succeed. And quite often we are not the ones to define those terms. Lord, You alone can see all the interworkings of the circumstances in which we find ourselves. May we obey. May we have confidence in You. May we be diligent. I can do whatever You call me to do.

For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:13

Faith Well Placed

Father, another new day is before me. May it be all that You want it to be for me. Help me to be attentive to Your direction. Help me to be a blessing to those around me. “Out of my life may Jesus shine.”

Hebrews 11:1 (<<click here)

Faith = reality of hope, evidence of things we can’t see

For many, Lord, this is a struggle. We like to think in concrete terms. Words like “reality” and “evidence” we can deal with. But “faith”? “Hope”? We can’t see those…but they are no less real.

My study Bible *shares a good way to think about it.

“Do you remember how you felt when you were very young and your birthday approached? You were excited and anxious. You knew you would certainly receive gifts and other special treats. But some things would be a surprise. Birthdays combine assurance and anticipation and so does faith! Faith is the confidence based on past experience that God’s new and fresh surprises will surely be ours.”

An old hymn comes to mind, “He Never Has Failed Me Yet.” And I can testify with its author W.J. Henry, “I have proven Him true; what He says He will do. He never has failed me yet.”

Joshua in his final address to the Israelites said,

“Soon I will die, going the way of everything on earth. Deep in your hearts you know that every promise of the Lord your God has come true. Not a single one has failed!” Joshua 23:4

Thank You, Lord, that we can place everything in Your unfailing hands. Our faith is well placed!

Go Ahead of Me

Father, I am so grateful for…You. A verse comes to mind quite often and I realize in context it is a part of Moses’ farewell speech to the Israelites but it is equally as applicable to me (to all of us) this day.

“So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the Lord Your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you.” Deuteronomy 31:6

And then, too, from Paul’s writings to the Ephesians,

“For we are not fighting against flesh and blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:12

We literally live in a war zone. Some days are relatively quiet and other days we are fighting for our lives. The evil of this world is out to take us down by whatever means it can… and as Paul says this evil is not human – humanity is but a tool used to accomplish its nefarious ends.

Looking about before this day’s journey, I do not know what it will hold. For me the only sure thing of this day is that You, Lord, “will personally go ahead of” me. You “will neither fail… nor abandon” me. Help me to trust You. Help me feel the reality of Your love for me. Help me to be a reality of Your love in a world of hurt and dying people. Help me to reflect my Savior to a world who so desperately needs You.
