Lead, Kindly Light

Father, it has happened literally hundreds of times over the past couple of years but every day I am amazed when You wake me. It is never with a jolt, leaving my heart pounding, but it always seems that I just open my eyes, glance at the clock and it is time for me to rise. And it’s not like I need up the same time of day…but You are faithful and You love me with a strong, consistent love. Thank You, Father.

I’m sure it comes as no surprise but I love music – all kinds of music! But one of my favorites has been a part of my life for my entire life and that is hymns. From the first time my mother carried me in her arms to church, hymns have touched me.

This morning after waking, before I even made it down the hall, a hymn popped into my mind – Lead, Kindly Light. The title itself was prompted by thoughts of You, Lord, for You are surely my patient, gentle guide through each and every day.

I’ve read where this song, written in 1833 by John Henry Newman, has been appropriately sung by many in dire circumstances and rightly so. But it is also a beautiful song that gives comfort along any part of life’s journey. The first verse reads,

Lead, kindly Light, amid the encircling gloom, lead Thou me on!
The night is dark, and I am far from home; lead Thou me on!
Keep Thou my feet; I do not ask to see
The distant scene; one step enough for me.

To me, it speaks of peace. I don’t need to see far ahead as my life moves continually onward for, Lord, one step [is] enough for me.” Lord, there is great comfort with You by my side throughout each stop of our journey together.

Impact of the WORD

As I have sat here this morning, Father, my thoughts have been on a friend who from our perspective unexpectedly crossed the threshold into Your waiting arms this week. We just never know when our time here on this earth will be complete. My friend was ready to be called home; he was Your faithful follower. May we all be ready to do the same and may we all be diligent in bringing others to You so they may be ready as well.

Lord, in reading this passage and the coinciding notes in my study Bible*, it brings to mind once more my friend. His name is Kerry Hooper. I met him almost 30 years ago. He printed just about everything for a Christian bookstore that I worked for. The whole time I knew him, he lived a life worthy of the calling You place upon his life – both professionally and privately. He truly worshiped “Christ as Lord of [his] life.”

He lived out his faith and if anyone asked about his life as a believer he was always ready to explain it. Even after going into business for himself, he was truly a Christian businessman. He was upright and a man of integrity. He shared his faith in a “gentle and respectful way” with a conscience that was clear.

Kerry was a humble man of God, and I’m sure he was far from perfect – for none of us are – but his faith was genuine and it was obvious that he was a man after God’s own heart.

Lord, may I live out my life as a beacon for you. Help me to live out my life as Kerry did – as so many of Your followers do – may Your kingdom be increased as Your will is made known through us. Amen.

Gentle Awakening

Father, I continue to be amazed at the multifaceted aspects of Your loving-kindness shown to me. In times past I have spoken of how You gently wake me each and every morning. Some may be quick to say that I am giving credit where no credit is due. They may say that I am just in the habit of waking at a certain time. But as I look back over my entries of our time together, that is not the case. The times I wake up are consistently inconsistent. 🙂 Today is was 6:00, yesterday it was 4:30, a few days ago it was 5:30.

Father, You give me what I need in sleep. You wake me early enough for me to accomplish the tasks at hand for that day. there was even a day this past week where I slept through the night and didn’t wake up until Karen’s alarm went off a bit before 7:00 for her to get up for school! You knew I needed the rest so You let me sleep.

Father, you love us and You show us that love in a multitude of ways every day. Many times we don’t see because we are just not paying attention. Father, help me to pay attention, for seeing and feeling Your love for me inspires me. For if the Creator of all that there is can take time and make the effort to love me, amongst the billions of souls on this globe, then surely my soul can be enkindled to love others this day and every day.

Lord I praise You because of who You are
Not just for all the mighty things that You have done
Lord I worship You because of who You are
You’re all the reason that I need to voice my praise
Because of who You are
