Faded Flowers

Thank You, Father for a productive day yesterday on many fronts – preparation for Sunday, a good walk, and a good amount of wood split and stacked! Thank You for the blessing of mentally and physically being able to do what needs to be done.

1 Peter 1:23-25 (<<click here)

“The grass withers and the flower fades.
But the word of the lord remains forever.”

Lord, so much of our energies and resources are invested in the here and now but for the most part, those things are here today and gone tomorrow. We fight and bicker over things and it’s just a matter of time before they are gone…and no matter what we do, we can’t stop it.

Only one thing remains forever. There is only one thing on which we can build upon that will never go away… and that is your Word. And as Peter so wonderfully states “that Word is the Good News!” Because of Your sacrifice, Jesus, we can be “born again”, not into sin as we were at first but into life – life in You! Life that will never end!

Lord, help me to invest, not in withering grass or fading flowers, but to invest in You, in my relationship with You. And may I then invest You into my relationship with others as You have done with me. As I read yesterday, enable me to love them sincerely and deeply. If I am to impact them for You I must be genuine and I must strive to not love them superficially but down, down deep to the core of their being. Jesus, help me to reflect You in all I say and do. Amen!

Balance Law with Love

Dear, precious Father, I am so grateful that You made it possible for us to have a personal, intimate relationship. That You would love me so much to pursue me even after my habitual unfaithfulness to You is astounding. Only because of Your love for me can I remain faithful to You. Sin continues to entice me and will do so throughout the rest of my life but with Your strength and wisdom I am victorious! Praise Your Holy Name!

1 Timothy 1:1-11 (<<click here)

Lord, this passage has my head spinning! Help me focus onto what You would have me see this morning.

Paul says “the law is good when used correctly.” v8 It is important for me to know the law, gaining knowledge of right and wrong but it is to my detriment (and others for that matter)  if a majority of my time is consumed in such pursuits. It’s possible that I can invest too much time in dissecting and discussing minute points of the law.

Again it’s important to know the law. But Paul stresses that “the law was not intended for people who do what is right. It is for people who are lawless and rebellious, who are ungodly and sinful…” v9a

My goal is to be “filled with love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and genuine faith.” v5 I am called to live out that love and to proclaim “the glorious Good News of salvation through Christ – through You, Lord!

Being so “law” minded seems to lead us to be too legalistic and judgmental in our interactions with the world – with those who the law is for. But not one of us likes to be berated about our lifestyles and our life choices.

The old adage comes to mind. “You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.” Lord, help me to love others as You love others. Help me to invest myself in them. Help me to be a reflection of You in their lives – genuine, wholesome, transparent, loving, truthful compassionate. Lord, shine through me!

Without a doubt I believe that You love us. Every encounter recorded in the Gospels (the Good News) that you had with sinners was filled with compassion and understanding. You told them the truth but it was always communicated with love! You didn’t say their sin was acceptable but your overwhelming emphasis was true, genuine LOVE! Use me, Lord, to love like You do!

Authentically Genuine

Father, thank You for Your presence this morning. Thank You for making it possible for me to come before You. Only because of the sacrifice of Your Son, Jesus Christ, only because His blood covers my sins which are many can I be here with You.  I can never begin to thank You enough for Your grace and mercy, so undeserved but so generously extended. Take this day of mine and use it, use me, as You will. Amen.

Lord, I am called to love other believers and for the most part that is an easily achievable goal. But how I live my life before those who don’t believe, that can be a bit more difficult. You are surely working with me in this area. I know Your Spirit often stops me mid-thought from speaking or doing something that would be a poor reflection of You. I am to live and respond as You would, as someone who is authentically genuine and considerate, strong and insightful. Enable me to be more discerning in my conversations. May all my interactions be saturated in love – in Your love channeling through this vessel of clay. May I be found worthy to be called by Your name. I give myself over to You today, Jesus.

A Rare “Gem” Unearthed

Good morning, Father! I set my alarm to be able to be with You today but woke up early, tried to go back to sleep, and finally gave up and got up. This time together is too vital for me – 20 minutes of sleep isn’t a fair trade. Let’s do this!

1 Thessalonians 3:11-13 (<<click here)

Lord, this passage once again highlights an important spiritual concept for Paul – the idea that we are to be so full of love that it overflows! Not that long ago, I wrote of overflowing when he spoke of it in Philippians 1:9 (“Overflow”)

In this particular passage the love that should “grow and overflow” is all inclusive – it is to be a “love for one another and for all people.” Again my study Bible* makes an excellent point. “It’s not enough merely to be courteous to others, we must actively and persistently show love to them. Our love should be growing continually.”

As it came to mind yesterday, Lord, it’s just so natural to take the easiest path. Instead of letting our love overflow we just want the way that we love to go with the flow. If it’s convenient – sure I can love. If it’s going to make me get out of my comfort zone – eh, is it really that important? But it is that important – love is important.

When it comes to news-worthiness, be it TV or internet, there is an overwhelming amount of junk to jump into and bury ourselves in. But…even in those venues love gets everyone’s attention. Stories that show love for fellow dwellers of earth, be they human or not, stop us in our tracks – they go “viral” for good reason.

As human beings, we are drawn to love! For many, it is a rare “gem” to be unearthed. Even if the “gem” of stone is given to someone else, we have to see it! Our heart’s desire is that we might find that “gem”, too! Why won’t someone give me that “gem”?

Genuine gems are rare – so is genuine love. Lord, You told us (John 13:35) that “everyone will know that [we] are [Your] disciples, if [we] have love for one another.”

Your statement is fact and it must be fleshed out in our lives every day! Genuine gems are valuable – imitation gems not so much. The same goes for love. Manufactured love doesn’t go very far, but genuine love? People are drawn to it. Lord if we would just continually grow and cultivate Your love in us there will be plenty to go around. We can give, give and there will always be more – for Your love knows no end, it just continues to multiply!

Lord, Jesus, help me to love as You love. May I be a vessel where Your love can be cultivated so much so that its abundance will be available to all!
