Grow Down

Father, forgive me for yielding to distraction…this is my time with You and Facebook should have no part in it. My phone is down and my attention is on You. Please help me hear and listen to what You have to say to me today.

Ephesians 3:14-21 (<<click the green)

Lord, help me to be “empowered…with inner strength through Your Spirit.” I know You have been doing a new work in me, accomplishing things that I could never do on my own (Praise Your Holy name! All the glory to You!) and I pray that I will cling to You. May my inner strength continue to be powered from Your “glorious, unlimited resources.”

This wonderful passage admonishes me to let my roots “grow down into Your love and keep me strong.”  Without You, I am surely weak and helpless! In my own strength, I fail. Only in You am I victorious. Thank you, Lord…

I am incomplete without Your love. Help me so that my overwhelming desire will be to “have the power to understand how WIDE, how LONG, how HIGH, and how DEEP Your love is”! May I “experience the love of Christ” – overwhelm me with Your love. May it gush and splash over on to all I meet!

And “through Your mighty power at work within me accomplish infinitely more than I might ask or [even] think”!

Grow

A full weekend but a good weekend! Thank You, Father, for Your watching over us in our travels. Thank You for Your presence. Thank You for the love You have given us and the love we have for each other. I pray for Your guiding hand throughout the up-and-coming week. Amen.

Revelation 2:19 (<<click green)

One of the most important aspects of our relationship with You, Lord, is that we are to grow. We should be having “constant improvement” in the areas of love…faith…service, and…patient endurance.”

My study Bible* reminds me that, “Because the times are critical, we must spend our days wisely and faithfully.” Lord, do I do that? In a recent sermon, I reminded my congregations that You have given every one of us exactly 86,400 seconds to use at our discretion. Do we use them “wisely and faithfully”?

I realize that we all need down time but It can be easy to accomplish nothing with the time we have. Others can run from sun up to sundown busying themselves with all kinds of things. But if we are not seeking “constant improvement” in the areas of “love…faith…service, and…patient endurance” what good is it all?

Lord, help me today to examine what I do and how I do it. May the many aspects of my life be pleasing in Your sight. Help me to conscientiously be moving forward in my relationship with You. “Because the times are critical” may I be constantly be seeking Your directive in every facet of my life. Amen.

Keep On, Keeping On!

Some days, Father, it is difficult to sit and write – and this is one of them. My mind is distracted, going a multitude of directions. I’m a little off-kilter. I ask for Your forgiveness and that You help me to focus on the important not the trivial.

Titus 1:1-4 (<<click here)

I am still struggling and time is ticking away. I suppose I could compare myself to the island of Crete where Titus was sent to minister. The Good News had touched many lives but there was much to be done – to take numerous individuals all going different directions in life and attempting to bring them together as one body of believers would be the challenge.

Established mindsets are difficult to overcome. Even some who seemed solid in their determination to follow Christ would have issues with things that had long ago been laid to rest. As are we, the church is a living breathing organism. And as in any and every setting, the church continues to grow and decline, and mature and fall back. It is an ongoing endeavor both for the church and the individual to maintain their relationship with You, Lord, through all the many ups and downs. We kid ourselves if we think it doesn’t happen to us or that it only happens to us. All of us must continue to strive to keep our relationship with You alive and well. Jesus, You are there for us, You don’t give up on us, You forgive us when we fall but We are the ones who must decide to move forward – to not give up, but to advance.

Lord, help me to keep in line with You – to not throw in the towel but to keep on, keeping on!

A Rare “Gem” Unearthed

Good morning, Father! I set my alarm to be able to be with You today but woke up early, tried to go back to sleep, and finally gave up and got up. This time together is too vital for me – 20 minutes of sleep isn’t a fair trade. Let’s do this!

I Thessalonians 3:11-13 (<<click here)

Lord, this passage once again highlights an important spiritual concept for Paul – the idea that we are to be so full of love that it overflows! Not that long ago, I wrote of overflowing when he spoke of it in Philippians 1:9 (“Overflow”)

In this particular passage the love that should “grow and overflow” is all inclusive – it is to be a “love for one another and for all people.” Again my study Bible* makes an excellent point. “It’s not enough merely to be courteous to others, we must actively and persistently show love to them. Our love should be growing continually.”

As it came to mind yesterday, Lord, it’s just so natural to take the easiest path. Instead of letting our love overflow we just want the way that we love to go with the flow. If it’s convenient – sure I can love. If it’s going to make me get out of my comfort zone – eh, is it really that important? But it is that important – love is important.

When it comes to news-worthiness, be it TV or internet, there is an overwhelming amount of junk to jump into and bury ourselves in. But…even in those venues love gets everyone’s attention. Stories that show love for fellow dwellers of earth, be they human or not, stop us in our tracks – they go “viral” for good reason.

As human beings we are drawn to love! For many it is a rare “gem” to be unearthed. Even if the “gem” of stone is given to someone else, we have to see it! Our hearts desire is that we might find that “gem”, too! Why won’t someone give me that “gem”?

Genuine gems are rare – so is genuine love. Lord, You told us (John 13:35) that “everyone will know that [we] are [Your] disciples, if [we] have love for one another.”

Your statement is fact and it must be fleshed out in our lives every day! Genuine gems are valuable – imitation gems not so much. The same goes for love. Manufactured love doesn’t go very far, but genuine love? People are drawn to it. Lord if we would just continually grow and cultivate Your love in us there will be plenty to go around. We can give, give and there will always be more – for Your love knows no end, it just continues to multiply!

Lord, Jesus, help me to love as You love. May I be a vessel where Your love can be cultivated so much so that its abundance will be available to all!
