Your Light Broke Through

Father, I’ve been here for ten minutes and am fretting over what to write You. Everything that pops into my head sounds like something I’ve already written several times in some way or another. I was stymied until You spoke into my spirit and said that You don’t mind if I repeat myself. I thought, my mother doesn’t care how many times I start off with, “Good morning, Mother.” What’s important to her is that I am calling! What’s important to You is that I am here with You. We are spending time together, and I am the better for it. Thank You, Father.

1 John 1:5-7 (<< click here)

“God is light…” and my study Bible* says that “light represents what is good, pure, true, holy, and reliable.” By nature we are not light – we are darkness which “represents what is sinful and evil.” We were not created to be that way but are that way by birth. We cannot make our own light. In fact, many don’t even realize that they are trapped in the darkness. They trudge through life stumbling blindly about trying to find their way.

And, Lord, only You can help us. Only You can shine Your light into our darkness. It shows things as they truly are. Only You can lead us out of our own darkness into Your light. And as John proclaims, “if we are living in the light, as God is in the light…the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.” You are our only hope and with great gratitude, You are mighty to save!

As I’ve been writing, a song has been rambling through my mind and it is definitely worth sharing. The song is “Your Love Broke Through” by Keith Green. Light isn’t in the lyrics but love is and You are love as well!

Like a foolish dreamer, trying to build a highway to the sky
All my hopes would come tumbling down, and I never knew just why
Until today, when you pulled away the clouds that hung
     like curtains on my eyes
Well I’ve been blind all these wasted years and I thought I was so wise
But then you took me by surprise
Like waking up from the longest dream, how real it seemed
Until your love broke through
I’ve been lost in a fantasy, that blinded me
Until your love broke through
All my life I’ve been searching for that crazy missing part
And with one touch, you just rolled away the stone that held my heart
And now I see that the answer was as easy, as just asking you in
And I am so sure I could never doubt your gentle touch again
It’s like the power of the wind
Like waking up from the longest dream, how real it seemed
Until your love broke through
I’ve been lost in a fantasy, that blinded me
Until your love, your love, broke through

Beware the Charlatans

Father, I am grateful for Your love and forgiveness, for Your mercy and grace. And those words and the reality of those words are not just concepts to be tossed about. I have experienced them and continue to experience them. I surely don’t deserve it but You day after day lavishly bless me with these things and so much more. Praise Your Holy Name! Amen!

2 Peter 2:1-3 (<<click here)

Lord, another reason that we must be diligent in reading Your word and speaking with – and listening to – You is to assure that we are not led astray. Most definitely those who proclaim Your word are not infallible, we have our struggles, we make mistakes. Because of this, Your people must be discerning. We should pray for and lift up Your servants.

But another reason we should pray for discernment is that for millennia there have been charlatans who have not been driven by desires to further Your Kingdom but instead are all about fulfilling their own agendas of power or prosperity – some, at their core, have as their goal to undermine Your Kingdom. They are all about discrediting Your Church and Your name.

I’m sure some started with their hearts in the right place but those first tastes of power and control moved things from their hearts to their heads. They were in charge. They deserved their portion of the “profits.” They, little by little, came to see themselves living above the Law.

Lord, first of all, may we all be diligent in keeping ourselves true to You – striving to immerse ourselves in the Bible and spending quality time in Your presence. Then may we fervently pray for those who lead us. May we pray for their purity of heart. May we not hesitate to come to them if realignment is necessary for their lives. May we do so in Your love but may we not shy from the responsibility. And Lord, if they will not change may we not hesitate to remove ourselves from their influence of our lives.

Help us to seek Your face and to live pure and holy lives in Your power and strength. Amen.

Be Holy? You Betcha!

It’s been too long since I’ve come to sit with You, Father. I didn’t realize until just now that’s it’s been 4 days! I was thinking it had only been a couple! I’m sorry…I’m here to learn. Help me to listen.

1 Peter 1:13-16 (<<click here)

Lord, You have set the bar pretty high. Peter admonishes us to “prepare your minds for action,” so that’s where we begin. Living “as God’s obedient children” is challenging enough but being holy “in everything, I do, just as God who chose me is holy” – now that’s huge!

A couple of points come to mind. First of all, Lord, You want us to succeed. You would never set us up to fail. It’s not an easy task be we can do it. Of course, a big thing is we aren’t meant to do it by ourselves – You are there all along the way. You are there to teach and correct and encourages us all along the way. You strengthen and empower us.

Then Peter exclaims that Scripture commands us to “be holy because You are holy.” Lord, You yourself commanded us to “be perfect, as our heavenly Father is perfect.” Matthew 5:48

Many at this point would cry out, “Why even try?” It’s a lost cause! I’m sure not perfect much less holy! But we can’t give up. There are things for which we strive.

Think of all the musicians and athletes out there. Their goal is to be the very best they can be. Sometimes they are spot on. Their performance is flawless; they pull off world record breaking feats. Other times it’s back to the basics because it’s just not happening. But when they falter, do they quit? No! They push on!

We must do the same spiritually! We will make mistakes! We will sin! And total holiness and perfection will only become a reality when we join You in eternity. But one must strain and push ourselves to attain the goals You’ve set for us for it is so worth it not just for eternity but for here and now, as well.

Set Apart

Thank You for a wonderful day yesterday, Father! Thank You for the words You gave me to share in the services and thank You for your palpable presence. Thank You for time well spent with Karen throughout the day and good interaction with Massey on the phone as well!

Hebrews 12:14 (<<click here)

      “…work at living a holy life…”

Lord, I really believe that when we think of the word “holy” we pretty much confine it to a church setting. But it is not just a “church” thing. All the way back in the Old Testament You proclaimed, “For I am the Lord your God. You must consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy.” Leviticus 11:44

Simply put, to be holy is to be set apart. We are set apart from the mundane things of this world. Instead we are set apart to live our lives in response to Your call on our lives. We are not to be just like everybody else going through the motions of life – and getting nowhere. But we are set apart for true life which is found only in You.

Eliminating You from life eliminates our purpose for living. If all life is, are these few years we walk this world and then we’re done then we are truly to be pitied. Without purpose there is really nothing to live for. Life is cruel. It is hard. It is unforgiving. And in the long run it is unfulfilling. Rays of joy will occasionally filter through but when we die, that’s it. Death has the final say.

But… we set ourselves apart, when we become holy, we realize that life is not just about here and now. It is more than just me. The things of this world for which we strive will all pass away, but when we set ourselves apart and follow You, we invest in eternity.

All the things we truly cherish in life become more than a hit or miss possibility. And at the core of these cherished things is love. And love of You, and others and ourselves is forever. It never ends. It never dies.

Lord, help us to set ourselves apart – make us holy.

Your Name Is Mighty in Power

Father, “no one is like You…You are great, and Your name is mighty in power.” Jeremiah 10:6 Your creation will worship many things and we worship others, too – musicians, actors, athletes, leaders but no one is like You.” We fail / we let people down / we are not perfect / we are sinful.

You never fail.
You are always there for us.
You are perfect in every way.
You have always been and will always be holy.
“You are great.”

You alone are worthy of our praise… and honor… and worship – for “no one is like You!”

“Your name is mighty in power.” You are a mighty God – the Creator of all that is! There is no question there. But to say Your name is mighty in power takes it to a whole other level! We often pray “in Jesus’ name,“ but do we take to heart what that means?

At creation You spoke things into existence. Everything that is (in all its vast diversity) came to be just because You said so! So much power in words. You are a God of action and power. When we call upon You, You hear us so even “Your name is mighty in power”!

Fill me today with Your power to accomplish what needs to be done and to stand against what would hinder me. Father, use me this day to do Your will!
