Immersed in Honey

Father, I am so sorry that we have taken Your beautifully perfect creation and have twisted it into something ugly. What You meant to be purposeful and fulfilling we have warped into many things that are lost, misguided and empty. I pray that You could help me to be an instrument used by You to draw my world once again to You, for beauty, perfection, purpose, and fulfillment is truly only found in You.

Colossians 2:16-23 (<<click here)

Lord, this world is a discombobulated hodge-podge of thoughts and ideas, it is a cacophony of voices pulling us all here then there. We are literally commanded to be inclusive, tolerant and expected to accept every conceivable variance of reality. “Political correctness” can tell us what we say, what we do, how we act. But Lord, You are  “reality.” And You alone can set us free from the spiritual powers of this world.” v20b

Interestingly enough with all our “open-mindedness” and accepting and inclusive mentalities, You are excluded. The Way and the Truth is rejected.

We press others into believing what we believe because we don’t want to be pressed into believing what You say we should believe. How ironic…we cast aside the one true God so that we can be our own gods. We in our perverted, sinful way want others to be like us because we don’t want to be told by You to be like You.

Lord, help me to keep You first and foremost in my life. You alone are reality – the world is a very cheap imitation, a house of cards ready to fall – destined to do so. The idealistic mindsets of this world are like honey – initially sweet and enticing but we cannot immerse ourselves in them, doing so is death – we cannot move, we cannot escape, we cannot breathe. Only by coming to You in repentance, humility, seeking forgiveness can we be set free.

Lord, help me not to be carried away by the “sweetness” of the world and help me to show the world who You truly are so they may be saved as well. Amen.

More Flies with Honey than with Vinegar

Yesterday was a physically intense day, Father, and my body is paying for it. But regardless of how I feel physically may I be spiritually ready to receive what You have for me this morning. Amen.

Jude 1:22-23 (<<click green)

Mercy. It should be a common trait amongst believers for You, Lord, have surely extended it to each one of us. But quite often we withhold it. We land on the side of judgment instead. Too often we readily condemn and it is easy to leave compassion and kindness out of the equation altogether.

Lord, in Matthew 26:16-20 You gave us the Great Commission. We were told,

Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations [help the people to learn of Me, believe in Me, and obey My words] vs.19 Amplified Bible

Lord, if we are to tell people about You and what we must do as followers of You, how are we going to accomplish that task by being judgmental?

An old adage comes to mind that is very appropriate, “You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.” Though it is not from the Bible it is sure not anti-biblical. You have given us the wonderful gifts of salvation from our sins and eternal life to boot. Not a one of us is perfect. “For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.” Romans 3:23 But our very nature makes us want to push ourselves forward by shoving others behind and beneath us.

Yes, our world is full of sinners (I am one of many!) Many are in direct opposition to You and Your standards, Lord. Many thumb their noses at You and do as they please. But how can I possibly impact the world for You by setting out bowls of vinegar? Who would be drawn to You by that? …no one.

Lord, May I, and all Your children who desire to align themselves with You, be eager to spread the honey all around. May we be merciful. Amen.

Balance Law with Love

Dear, precious Father, I am so grateful that You made it possible for us to have a personal, intimate relationship. That You would love me so much to pursue me even after my habitual unfaithfulness to You is astounding. Only because of Your love for me can I remain faithful to You. Sin continues to entice me and will do so throughout the rest of my life but with Your strength and wisdom I am victorious! Praise Your Holy Name!

1 Timothy 1:1-11 (<<click here)

Lord, this passage has my head spinning! Help me focus onto what You would have me see this morning.

Paul says “the law is good when used correctly.” v8 It is important for me to know the law, gaining knowledge of right and wrong but it is to my detriment (and others for that matter)  if a majority of my time is consumed in such pursuits. It’s possible that I can invest too much time in dissecting and discussing minute points of the law.

Again it’s important to know the law. But Paul stresses that “the law was not intended for people who do what is right. It is for people who are lawless and rebellious, who are ungodly and sinful…” v9a

My goal is to be “filled with love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and genuine faith.” v5 I am called to live out that love and to proclaim “the glorious Good News of salvation through Christ – through You, Lord!

Being so “law” minded seems to lead us to be too legalistic and judgmental in our interactions with the world – with those who the law is for. But not one of us likes to be berated about our lifestyles and our life choices.

The old adage comes to mind. “You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.” Lord, help me to love others as You love others. Help me to invest myself in them. Help me to be a reflection of You in their lives – genuine, wholesome, transparent, loving, truthful compassionate. Lord, shine through me!

Without a doubt I believe that You love us. Every encounter recorded in the Gospels (the Good News) that you had with sinners was filled with compassion and understanding. You told them the truth but it was always communicated with love! You didn’t say their sin was acceptable but your overwhelming emphasis was true, genuine LOVE! Use me, Lord, to love like You do!
