New Every Morning

(A beautiful shot of a sunrise at Dolly Sods Wilderness Area,
near where I graduated from high school.)

As I look out the window this morning, Father, the sun is barely tinting the sky. It brings to mind a passage from Lamentations 3:22-23. It reminds me that regardless of where we stand before You, Father, whether we are close or have distanced ourselves, “Because of [Your] great love…[Your] compassions never fail. They are new every morning.”

I am so, so grateful that You love me – You love all of us. And not just those who are loveable. And not just those who love You back. You love every single person whom You have brought into existence. Your compassions for us never fail. Not because we deserve them or have earned them but because You are love. (1 John 4:8)

Matthew 5:43-48 gives us quite the challenge. Lord, we are not adherents to the law propitiated by the religious leaders of Your day but we might as well be. The whole idea of loving our neighbors (those that are loveable) and hating our enemies is an idea that we easily gravitate to. And WAY too many people flesh that out every day!

Here’s You response to that mindset, “But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you!

See those exclamation points? Your words are not just idle suggestions – You mean business! From my own vantage point I would think that if anyone would possibly have reason to hate, it is You, Lord. You literally give us everything and are we grateful? …some of us yes but a majority of Your creation, not in the least. We are so arrogant and full of ourselves that we go so far as to deny Your very existence!

But what do you do? You give Your “sunlight to both the evil and the good” and You send Your “rain on the just and the unjust alike.”

And that’s the kicker, God calls us, his “true children”, to act as He would act, “to be perfect, even as [our] Father in heaven is perfect.”

Lord Jesus, that word “perfect” is daunting, to say the least, but it is a calling to be all we were made to be. You know our limitations and You know how far we can be stretched. I would pray that I would be Your “true” child. Your love is long-suffering and You will never give up on me. “Because of Your great love…[Your]compassions never fail. They are new every morning.” Amen –so be it!

New Every Morning

Ah…a peaceful morning to begin a new week, Father. I am so grateful that each day is a new day. Regardless of what past days have held, it is now behind and today is a clean slate, a fresh vantage point. Thank You, Father, for the wonderful assurance found in Lamentations 3:22-23 (<<click the green).

22The faithful love of the Lord never ends!
His mercies never cease.
23Great is his faithfulness;
his mercies begin afresh each morning.

Lord, I know that You understand. You came to live amongst us. You experienced life from our perspective. Hebrews 4:15 tells us that You “faced all of the same testings [i.e. temptations] we do, yet [You] did not sin.”

We struggle to be faithful. We do so well for quite a while and then…we think poorly of someone at work…we lose patience with our spouse and say things that should not be said…we become angry with other drivers on the way to work. We listen to things we shouldn’t listen to, we watch things we shouldn’t watch, we read things we shouldn’t read…and I am not alone – we are all guilty

Last summer my family made a trip to Waco, Texas and visited Chip and Joanna Gains’ Magnolia Market. While there we purchased a steel wall sign that says, “Today is a good day for a good day.” Lord, today – and every day – is that day. I am eternally grateful that Your “faithful love…never ends” and that Your “mercies begin afresh each morning.” May I be the child You know that I can be. Amen.

It’s Not an Easy Road

Father, it’s a new day and a new year! As many have said, once again we have a clean slate with which to work. Our calendars are one thing but life with You and because of Your “great love we are not consumed” for Your “compassions never fail. They are new every morning…” Lamentations 3:22-23

May I be mindful of Your love – may it be a driving motivator for me every day.

On this day it is easy to think of looking back and looking forward. I have made good headway in my relationship with You, though it has not been without its bumps and potholes – many of my own making. I would pray, Lord, that I would be more attentive to Your guidance and more diligent in my following of You.

I am very aware that “It’s not an easy road we are traveling to heaven, for many are the thorns on the way; It’s not an easy road, but the Savior is with us, His presence gives us joy every day.” (It’s Not An Easy Road by J. W. Peterson)

Lord, help me to spread that joy that you so freely give. Help me to live my life to the fullest – in You! So that I, too, might wear the victors crown!

Peace in Spite of Storms

I am so grateful, Father, that Your “loving kindnesses indeed never cease, For [Your] compassions never fail. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.” Lamentations 3:22-23 The last several days have been taxing and it is a great reassurance to known that this day is a new day and that You are faithful and that Your “loving kindnesses indeed never cease.” Praise Your Holy name!

Regardless of what lies ahead, Lord, You are my rock-solid foundation. As this past week has proven this life is full of twists and turns and we never know what may be around the next bend – illness, heartache, disease, loss. Some things rock the boat but there are times when our boats are utterly destroyed and we are left floundering in the debris. But, Lord, You are steadfast, You are right there with us through it all. You alone are the constant in our lives.

The world may exclaim, “Where is your God now? Where is He in the midst of all of this?” And yes, it is difficult and, yes, I may be shaken but my line of salvation is truth! I have no doubt whatsoever that you are there. I would ask Paul’s words would be fulfilled in my life, that through the power of the Holy Spirit who lives within [me]” that I would be able to “carefully guard the precious truth that has been entrusted to [me].” And it is just as important that I don’t hoard this truth but that I liberally share it with all my sojourners. For truly Your “compassions never fail. They are new every morning!”
