Driven by Love

As I sit here, Father, I think of times in my life when I have needed an attitude adjustment. I have blamed those times on weariness of body and mind and because of those things my defenses were down but when all is said and done my attitude needs adjusting and its the kind that only You can perform. With the utmost of reverence, I can bow at Your feet and can know that Your mercy is available to me. I realize that I am nothing and I cannot survive this life without You. Thank You for Your forgiveness, Your healing, and for realigning me. Only in You am I made whole!

What a list of attributes worthy of aspiration on the part of every believer! Lord, Paul gives a fine list of qualities for which leaders, such as myself, should seek and strive. So many eyes are upon us. Most importantly Your eyes, Lord. Each and every day my goal must be to do what pleases You. And, yes, part of it is adhering to guidelines set in Your Word – that is very important – but I truly believe that my love for You must be the strongest driving factor. I can follow all the proper rules and regulations in my relationship with Karen but if I am not motivated by love for her things start to fall apart, selfishness worms its way in, apathy and self-inflicted blindness begin to take its toll on our relationship. It is magnified even more so in my relationship with You, Jesus. Love has to be my motivator. Time and time again You show me Your love for me Repeatedly, I see examples of love that others have for You. Help me to love You more and more. That is what will keep me true, that will adjust my attitude. Please, help me to clearly see Your love for me – that alone is motivation enough.

Lord Jesus, Your eyes are upon me but so are the eyes of everyone around me. For good or for bad, people see what I say or do. Most of the time I am a good reflection of You… but way too often I am not. Please, enable me to allow Your love to fill me each and every day so I can be a lighthouse that will guide others away from danger and that will guide them safely into a harbor of Your love and grace!

Super Leaders

There is no better place to begin this week, Father, than here at Your feet. May I find the treasure You have in store for me today and once found may I embrace it and live it out.

Lord, this verse admonishes me to “remember the leaders who taught me the word of God.” Wow! That’s a lot to remember! There have been so many in my life. Numerous family members, Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teachers, Caravan leaders, Bible Quiz volunteers, Camp speakers, denominational and revival speakers, college professors, radio preachers and, oh, so many friends and fellow churchmen over the years. Some names and sometimes just faces come to mind but I can’t even remember them all. I may falter but, Lord, You know every single one of them. Bless those who are still walking this old earth today and hug those who are with You in glory!

It is overwhelming to think of all those who have impacted me for Your kingdom, Lord. May I take the very best of all of them as I walk my pilgrim journey. May I live it out in such a way that You are lifted high, that You are shown for the wonderful Savior that You are. May I lift the standard high so that others may see and “follow the example of my faith,” as well.

Pulse of Humanity

I truly need these times together, Father. I would ask that You would burden my heart with the need for consistently doing so. I know You are with me each day but I also realize that daily setting aside some alone time greatly impacts me for that day, as well as, long term. Our time together is crucial for myself and for Your kingdom.

Lord, I like that my study Bible* points out that when it comes to leaders in the church that it is more than just skill and knowledge. Paul stresses that character is of utmost importance. “It is important to have leaders who can effectively preach God’s Word; it is even more important to have those who can live out God’s Word and be examples for others to follow.”

Lord, please help me to live out my faith. Help me to not just preach what You lay upon my heart but to truly live it out. You know that I would love to be a full-time pastor but – wisely so – You also know that living my life in the “real” world helps me to keep it real, too. Many important things can be accomplished in my study but real life application is beneficial as well. As I serve bi-vocationally help me to balance the important things. And, Lord, I would also pray for others who proclaim Your Word across this globe. Help them to keep it real. May they have regular opportunity to keep their fingers on the pulse of humanity.

Don’t Judge a Book…

What a restful night’s sleep! Thank You Father! Please take this day and use it, use me, to accomplish Your will.  Help me be attentive and obedient.

1 Timothy 5:24-25 (<<click here)

These two verses speak of selecting leaders but it is very applicable to all of our interactions with others. The phrase “Don’t judge a book by its cover” comes to mind. Lord, I know that quite often we jump to conclusions with people, sometimes makes snap decisions after meeting others for the first time. Sometimes we are even tempted to pinhole people by what others have said before we even meet them.

Lord, help me to be discerning and along with that to be patient and compassionate. I should never be quick to judge, though on many occasions it is very easy to do. And help me remember, too, that it works both ways. Often we think of people negatively right at the start but then learn that they are in actually good people. Maybe it’s more subtle but sometimes we like people because that say or do acceptable things in the beginning but as time goes on we find they are not sincere or possibly have ulterior motives.

When it comes right down to it, Lord, what I need is to see people as You do. Help me to draw closer to You so that You can direct my thoughts and actions. Thank You for Your love and presence!

Driven by Love

Once again, Father, I sit here and I’m in the same place I was yesterday…. We were so blessed with an outpouring of Your presence in both services yesterday morning – I am so grateful. Then yesterday afternoon my attitudes and actions went everywhere but where they should have been. I don’t know if it’s because I’m weary from a lot of extra physical labor this past week, so my defenses are down or what but, Father, I need an attitude adjustment! And it’s the kind that only You can perform. With the utmost of reverence I bow at Your feet… Be merciful on this old sinner. I am nothing and cannot survive this life without You. Please forgive me, heal me, and realign me. Only in You can I be made whole!
