A Tall Order

Father, today may I be a vessel used of You. All that I do and say, all that I have had a hand in, may it all be used by You to lift You up so others can see You more clearly. As John, the Baptist said of Your Son, “He must increase but I must decrease.” John 3:30 May this be my proclamation today.

I am called to pray, Lord, for all people”. This, obviously, is an all-inclusive statement and that is how it must be. As I think about the width of it, “all” includes a lot of people who don’t think like I do. It includes, literally millions who don’t think like You do! But You, very clearly call me to “ask [You] to help them.” You call me to “intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them.” That is one tall order! And the thing is that it is way more than people just not thinking like You do. They oppose You! Many deny Your very existence! But You called us to pray for them, to ask that You help them, to intercede on their behalf, to be thankful for them! Yes…that is a tall order but how can I do anything less. All I have to do is to look at our relationship – Yours and mine. Have I done anything to deserve Your love? No… Am I worthy in and of myself, to be accepted by You? No… The only thing that enables this sinner to stand in Your presence is that fact that I have accepted Your love and forgiveness – grace has been extended and gratefully accepted. (Thank You, Lord…)

Lord, help me to pray, and intercede and thank You for those who are not a part of Your family…yet!  And help me do it one person at a time, each and every day!

Lifting Each Other Up

Father, the ebb and flow of life sure make it challenging. I truly believe You use all of my ups and downs to help me to grow – to stretch me. Right now life, in general, is on an even keel but my spiritual life is a little wonky. I want to spend time with You but part of me keeps throwing things into the works to hinder me. I’m not waking up early enough to do this and so I don’t. I feel like You are saying, “Its time to grow up. I love You, but it is not in your best interest to continue on as a child. I am here, and I always will be, but it’s time for you to take responsibility. I want to spend time with you but you need to take the initiative to take action.” Father, I know You believe I can – help me not to let You down. Help me to grow up. Amen – so be it.

Lord, I realize that getting together with fellow believers is of utmost importance. Your word encourages us to not give up meeting together” Hebrews 10:25 But just as important is what we do for each other in the in-between times. Our remaining strong in our faith encourages the believers to remain strong in their faith. “It gives us new life to know that [others] are standing firm in the Lord.” vs.8

Lord, help me to pray for my fellow believers, those that are near, those that are far and for those I don’t even know. Help me to be grateful for them – may they be inspirational to me to keep on keeping on. Help me to pray faithfully for them. And, Lord, help to pray for more than just physical things – though they are important as well. But help me to pray for their relationship with You. I struggle spiritually and I know that I am not alone. We all struggle. Our world and our very nature are constantly attempting to pull us from You. We want what we want. We want the easiest path. We’re tired and worn out and just want to crash…and rest… and sleep. Help us all to get that “new life” by encouraging each other to remain strong in our faith.

Let Your ‘Yes’ Be ‘Yes,’ and Your ‘No,’ ‘No’

I am grateful, Father, that You are active in my life. Just thinking through last night, I know, I have no doubt whatsoever, that Your hand was upon me. I was up once in the early hours of the night, and then around 2:30 I was wide awake and could not get comfortable in bed – but You were with me! I went to the couch and changed sides a couple times but was not up again until Your gentle call before 6:00 to begin my day. You are at loving Father…and I love You, too!

Lord, as I sit here pondering Your word one of the first things that popped into my head was prayer. (And I do not believe it was just a random thought!) One of the things I have dealt with over the last couple of years was being true to my word when someone has asked me to pray for a specific need or situation.

Growing up in the church it is almost a knee-jerk reaction when someone requests prayer to answer “yes”. But many times I would say “yes” but later realize that I never did. It wasn’t intentional…it was negligence. I meant to…I wanted to…but I didn’t….

So now when someone asks for prayer, I don’t just say “yes” but I take the time right then and whisper a prayer, and quite often I will pray that the Holy Spirit will enable me to remember to pray later as well.

Just this morning, before sitting down to write, I saw a request for prayer on Facebook. So before I “liked” it and before I commented, I prayed. Saying I will and not doing so accomplishes nothing.

And, Lord Jesus, that’s what You are talking about here in this passage of Scripture – not about prayer specifically but about following through with what we say we will do. This is one of those passages that the wording of the King James Version sticks in my head from my youth. The New King James Version puts the last verse this way,

“…let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.” v37

May I continue to be a man of my word, Lord. When I say “yes” or “no” may others know that that is true through and through. I don’t want to leave them wondering. Amen.\

To the Work

Oh my, I am struggling this morning, Father. An early and full day at work followed by the special service at Beulah last night sure made getting up a challenge. And even being up, keeping my eyes open has not been entirely successful. But, I know spending time with You is vital to my spirits well-being. Starting off my mornings with You sets the pace and mentality for the day. May I hear you loud and clear.

James 1:27 (<<click here)

Reading this passage brings to mind the old Fanny Crosby hymn, “To the Work”.

To the work! To the work! We are servants of God.
Let us follow the path that our Master has trod.
With the balm of His counsel our strength to renew,
Let us do with our might what our hands find to do.
Toiling on… Let us hope (and trust) let us watch (and pray)
And labor till the Mater comes.

Lord, I cannot be idle. There are too many hurting and needy people in the world. There are material needs, which is an area we are most apt to respond to – we have resources and share. But there are also social needs – there are over 7 billion people on this planet but many are alone. And most importantly, the spiritual needs of humanity impact us all. We must be “to the work!”

Jesus, help me to “follow the path” that You have trod. May I daily, routinely, be about investing myself in the lives of other – at home, at church, at work, with loved ones, with acquaintances, with adversaries – with any and every one! Fill me with Your wisdom and strength so I may not grow weary of giving myself away.
