Keep a Strong Grip

It’s taken me a bit to get to this point this morning, Father, but I am ready to hear what You have for me. Help me to focus, giving You my attention.

Lord, I know it’s just a matter of time until You return. Your word is clear…it’s not an “if” but a “when.” As I cast my eyes over the landscape of this world evil is truly rampant – sin and all of its repercussions are in every quadrant. It may be winning millions of skirmishes but its defeat is ultimately inevitable. It’s difficult to grasp the fact that it can get any worse – but it will. Many spend an exuberant amount of time trying to figure out all the particulars but all I need to know is that it will get worse but evil will not have the final say!

Lord, help me to live out Pauls’ exhortation to “stand firm” and to “keep a strong grip on the teaching” I have received from You and from the followers after Your own heart. And I would ask that my overarching motivation would be the assurance that Your love and grace gives me – not temporary – but eternal comfort and a wonderful hope.” And may that assurance “comfort…and strengthen [me] in every good thing [I] do and say.” Thank You, Jesus, for all You are to me.

That’s All Folks!

Father, before this day gets too far along I truly want to place it into Your hands. I freely give it to You to use me as You want to accomplish Your will in the lives of those whom my life will touch. May my ears be attuned to Your voice and my I be quick to act, with no hesitation. All I have, all I am, is Yours.

Lord, more and more there seems to be talk of Your “coming soon”. Many feel that your return is imminent. And with the arrival of that momentous occasion, life as we know it will come to an end and new beginnings will be upon us.

It is of utmost importance that we are ready when You call…but are we readying ourselves in the right ways? Some spend a great deal of time trying to figure out as many details of the whens, and the wheres, and the whos and the hows of Your return as they can. And to what end? For me, it is enough to know that You are coming.

Others look gleefully to the end. They are happy that they will see You and that they will get to be with You for all eternity. And shockingly enough, some of those are equally as gleeful that “sinners” will get what’s coming to them. Finally, they will be shown to be right and those who didn’t agree with them, oh baby, they are gonna burn. What?! That’s not how You think, Lord.

The Apostle John quoted you saying,

“For God did not send his Son [You] into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” John 3:17

And of course, what did You say right before this?

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16

I want to be ready when You call, Lord, but may I be found doing my best to fulfill Your will this side of eternity. May I be “earnest and disciplined in [my] prayers” and “most important of all” may I “continue to show deep love for [others], for love covers a multitude of sins.”

Lord, Your command is that we not come home alone. Burden my heart to pray for and truly love others so they too can enjoy the great blessings of Your love.

The B-I-B-L-E

I so appreciate Your presence, Father, through the hustle and bustle of yesterday, going to and coming from work, sitting at our table during supper, helping our group as we (our Bible Study) went through another chapter in John, as Karen wrapped gifts, as I worked through Sunday’s sermon, and being a part of our family as we chatted with Massey. There is no part of my day where You are not welcome. Thank You for always being there.

The written Word and the living Word, where would we be without it and without You, Lord? It should be no surprise but it is still astounding that something so old, written so many years ago still impacts and changes lives today.

The B-I-B-L-E
Yes, that’s the book for me
I stand alone on the Word of God
The B-I-B-L-E!

Your Word is foundational – it is living! It is not just some old dusty tome but it continues to influence the lives of Your followers. The problems that plagued Your people thousands of years ago are still prominent today. Our language and customs and surroundings are different buy quite often our circumstances and struggles are the same. We must still strive to follow You. We must still rely on You – our living Word.

As we celebrate Your first coming – Your first Advent – may we be diligent in readying ourselves for Your return. May your Word fill us, may it influence us in how we respond to the world around us each and every day. We cannot do it without You for You are Emmanuel – God with us. And we’re grateful for that!

Imminent Arrival

Father, thank You for my Daily Bread Devotional today! The reading from Psalm 37 was very encouraging, especially vs. 24 – “When [I] fall, I will not be hurled headlong, because the Lord is the One who holds [my] hand.” I am so very grateful, Father, that You hold my hand!

Lord, it’s been 2000 years since You returned to Your Father and we still eagerly await Your return! The time does not dispel our hope and the assurance that Your arrival is imminent. Lord, help me to be diligent in the work You have for me! May I be sensitive to You as You bring others across my path. Embolden me. Give me the words. Fill me with Your love, so deep and wide. Thank You for Your long-suffering patience for You did not come “into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through” Yourself (John 3:17) Thank You for loving us so! Praise Your holy name forever and ever!
