Whole World in His Hands

A foggy morning greets me as I sit for our time together, Father. It is beautiful to behold. All the nuances of Your creation are a constant reminder of Your power and might and Your attention to detail. Your hand in creation is a great reassurance that Your hand is upon my life as well. Thank You, Father.

Revelation 5:1-5 (<<click the green)

In the midst of this scene of power and might and holiness, with everyone lifting praise deservingly to God, stands a strong and mighty angel. And in reference to a sealed scroll which God holds in His hand, he shouts in loud voice,

“Who is worthy to break the seals on this scroll and open it?” vs2

The Amplified Bible puts it this way,

“Who is worthy to open the scroll? And [who is entitled and deserves and is morally fit] to break its seals?” vs2

And because no one in all of heaven or earth or under the earth stepped forward, the Apostle John wept bitterly.

But one of the twenty-four elders said to [John], “Stop weeping! Look, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the heir to David’s throne, has won the victory. He is worthy to open the scroll and its seven seals.” vs5

I realize that that is a lot of introduction but as I write, Lord, it must be stressed that only You, the Lion of Judah, are worthy. In all of eternity both forward and backward only You were able to live a life of perfect obedience to God. Only You were able to pay the penalty for the sins of all humanity by dying on the cross. Only You in Your resurrection proclaimed Your power over evil and death! And because only You “won the victory,” only You “can be trusted with the world’s future”!*

A song from my childhood comes to mind. The repeated line of the first verse says it all, “He’s got the whole world in his hands.”

No matter where we find ourselves in our life’s journey, Lord, we are safely in Your hands…and that is where I want to remain. Amen.

He Holds the Keys!

Father, it has been as very full, last couple of days but I know that I need to sit down and have some time with You. May I hear what You have for me through Your word. Amen.

Revelation 1:17-18 (<<click green)

Every time I read Your word, Lord, I am prepared to read several verses but quite often something in a short passage makes me pause…and I paused on verses 17 & 18.

When I saw him, I fell at his feet as if I were dead. But he laid his right hand on me and said, “Don’t be afraid! I am the First and the Last. I am the living one. I died, but look—I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and the grave.

As You showed me last I read, You were not what John (or I) expected and all of that might and power literally knocked him out! But as You had said before “Don’t be afraid!” (Matthew 14:22-33) As it was then it is now with John – You’ve got absolutely everything under control!

And I just can’t get it out of my head – I picture You bursting with joy! You are excited and You just can’t wait to get the words out to John. You’ve got absolutely everything under control! You always have but we are slow learners. People die all around us, one nightly news program and we hear way more about death than we ever wanted to hear. In our own circles, loved ones succumb to death. We can’t avoid it. It is inevitable. You died as well…but it was by no means the end!

You said, “I died, but look – I am alive forever and ever!” And here’s the kicker for us, “And I hold the keys of death and the grave.” You conquered death and the grave and because You did, we too can! We have nothing to fear! You’ve got absolutely everything under control! Nothing is outside of the all-encompassing statement!

And if we are Your children and have placed our faith in You, then You joyously extend to us the spoils of Your victory – victory over death and the grave! Thank You, Lord. May we live without fear for victory is found in You!

Every Child of God Defeats this Evil World

Thank You, Father, for enabling me to get through so much yesterday for Sunday’s services, even with all the distractions. Help me to align myself with You today and to be faithful in all I say and do that it would be pleasing in Your sight. Amen.

1 John 5:4-5 (<<click here)

“For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith. And who can win this battle against the world? Only those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God.”

This portion of yesterday’s scripture also spoke to me, Lord. What stuck out was that “every child of God defeats this evil world.” The world we see about us is surely daunting for evil is rampant! But a child defeats it…if that child is Your child. We, Your children, can be victorious over this evil world only if we place our faith in You and that “believe that [You are] the Son of God.”

Once again, Lord, You have set things in place that help to flesh out Your word. Part of my daily routine is to read the Our Daily Bread devotional. For years I read the paperback version but for quite some time I have used the app on my phone. It is a great asset to my day. Anyway, today’s devotional providentially fits quite well with this passage, too. (Here’s the link if you’d like to read the whole thing yourself: Prepare the Child)

The author noted a “phrase [found] on many parenting websites…, “Prepare the child for the road, not the road for the child.” Instead of trying to remove all obstacles and pave the way for the children in our life, we should instead equip them to deal with the difficulties they encounter on the road ahead.”

As we grow and mature, obstacles provide us with…well, with opportunities to grow and mature. You use literally everything in our lives to work together for our good. Romans 8:28 (<< link))

Lord, help me to focus on You today. May my faith be placed squarely on You and nothing else. May all of my life’s experiences –all the good parts and the struggles and failings – enable me to “defeat this evil world.” May my strength and power be found in my faith in You so that I may “achieve this victory.” Amen.

No Better Place than Here

Father, after all these weeks I am still amazed and overwhelmingly blessed that You so gently wake me for our time together. Thank You, for You love. Thank You for the great privilege of spending one-on-one time with the Creator of all that is! It’s hard to wrap my brain around the concept that You really want to spend time with me! Praise Your Holy Name!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lord, Jesus, this morning I feel compelled to save the next portion of scripture for the next time we come together. I feel the need to just write this morning. As I look back over my life, Lord, You have been there every step of the way. Through every heart ache and trial, through every victory and all the joy, You have been by my side. I have been obedient and I have rebelled but You have never given up on me. The word “grateful” doesn’t even begin to express how I feel.
As I wondrously proclaim, “Even before You made the world, You loved me and chose me in You to be holy and without fault in Your eyes.” (Ephesians 1:4) That’s like forever but I honestly cannot recall a time in my life when I didn’t know You or at least when I didn’t know of You. I was blessed to be born into family the loved and wholeheartedly strove to serve You. And it went beyond Mom and Dad, four of my grandparents and every one of my aunts and uncles were of the same heart and mind. What a heritage! What a foundation on which to build my life! All the building blocks under me were solidly, securely placed on You! (Ephesians 2:11-22)
Now clearly I did not pop out of the womb perfect and without fault (Lord, You know that is true!) but Your hand has guided me. You have aligned my heart with Yours. Over the course of my life, I have wandered, I have blatantly sinned, I have hurt You and dirtied Your name in the process but I could never go beyond Your reach. The pull of Your love has always brought me back.
After 50+ years of living, some may look at who I am and what I’ve accomplished and they may shake their heads and think that I really haven’t done a whole lot with my life. I don’t have a huge bank account, I live in a nice but modest home, I have not ascended the ladder of success (by human standards) in the business world or in any denomination I have served. But Lord… I am where You have placed me. I faithfully serve as Your child in my home, at my job and in the two churches with which You have blessed me.
No, I am definitely not perfect. I stumble. I fall. But I am not defeated. Lord, You patiently work with me each and every day. You encourage me. You direct me. You help me. You encourage me. I am blessed beyond measure!
I am full of joy! I am content – but not to the point of complacency. I would follow You anywhere You would lead me, but for now I am where You want me to be – in the center of Your will. Help me to listen. Help me to continue to expand my horizons in You – to draw closer to You, to more and more be able to hear Your direction and to have the courage and wisdom to do and be all that you desire for me to do and be. There is no better place than here!
Deeper
Yesterday was sure a mixed bag for me, Father. I enjoyed Your presence and am grateful You could use me. But later I felt my weaknesses inhibited what You wanted to happen. I was fearful and didn’t address an opportunity as I should have. And then in a separate incident I was slighted and instead of finding comfort in You, I had to “discuss” it with others. I’m sorry… The only solution is to draw closer to You, so as to spend more time with You, so as to become more like You. Amen
1 Timothy 1:12-14 (<<click here)
How apropos the notes of my study Bible for this morning’s passage are for me today, Lord. Initially Paul stood against the followers of the Way but You were able to turn him around. But now he is bold and rock solid in his relationship with You – no matter what is thrown at him. As yesterday clearly points out, that is not me. But, as my study Bible notes read, “we can remain confident that Christ will help our faith and love grow as our relationship with him deepens.”
I am dependent upon You, Lord. Please continue to draw me to Your side. I have no doubt that You love me and I truly believe that Your plan for me is victory – I will overcome the adversities of this life. I would ask that You would turn my detriments into determination! May Your name be forever praised my loving and patient Lord and Savior!
