Ask for Wisdom

As I sat here, Father, and read through another prayer in The Valley of Vision: A Collection of Puritan Prayers and Devotions, I am once again touched. I could never write so eloquently or encompass my thoughts in such a concise manner but if could have I would have. One short line of it speaks volumes.

“There is no comfort in anything apart from enjoying thee and being engaged in thy service…”

I would say, Amen.

“If you need wisdom, ask our generous God…”

I am truly dependent upon You for wisdom, Lord. You have blessed me with experience and knowledge but it is not enough to accomplish tasks at hand if I do not yield myself to You seeking Your wisdom as to how to use what You have given me. Sometimes the difficulty lies in sorting through all the ramblings of my mind, shifting through them, to glean what is the most important or most beneficial for the need of the moment.

Writing sermons is a prime example of this. I have many pieces and parts in my mind, reading Your Word gives me inspiration, combing through commentaries can give my structure but only You can give me the wisdom to bring it all together in such a way that it will speak to those who will listen. Only You can put in those little extra things, of which I may not even be aware, that will speak to specific people in my congregations.

I surely cannot do it without You. For that matter, I can’t do life without You. The quote from today’s prayer is so true!

A Mighty Fortress

Thank You, Father, for every aspect of yesterday’s services. Your presence in preparation to the last “Amen” of the last service. I am so grateful that you take the little I have to offer and You choose to use it and adding Yourself into the equation the little is multiplied exponentially All the praise surely goes to You. The old song rings true, “Little Is Much When God Is in It.”

Temptation – what an all-inclusive unifier of the entirety of humanity.  Every person to ever walk the face of this earth has had to deal with it – and You, Lord, are no exception. And we all have failed, many times over, to not yield to its many allures – with one great exception, and that is You, Lord – Only You, in Your perfection, had the fortitude to withstand every assault that was leveled upon You.

Jesus I am oh so weak and my propensity to yield to the temptations that come my way is absolutely HUGE! My only hope is found in my relationship with You.

In and of myself I am utterly incapable of success but, praise Your holy name! You understand – You can relate because quite literally, You have walked in our shoes and have been victorious! Today and every day I come to You, I stand with You – for again that is where my strength is. When I keep my eyes on You I can overcome anything that crosses my path.

Martin Luther surely got it right! “A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing; our help in He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing…” Thank You, Lord, for being that “mighty Fortress” for me, I would be lost without You!

Yeilding

Father, thank You for a good night’s rest, I would ask that Your hand would be upon me this day and that I would be focused and that my preparations for worship Sunday would align with what You want to accomplish. Work through me to advance Your kingdom here on earth.

Lord, may I never cease to be astonished at how You work in my life! I sit down and write out my opening prayer, before reading this morning’s text and already You are guiding my thoughts in the directions it should go! Praise You, Lord!

I’m to “Let the message about [You], in all its richness, fill [my life].” I’m to “teach and council… with all the wisdom” You give me. You direct me in my song selections for worship. I am so grateful that You work in my life. Help me to keep in mind at all times that I am Your representative to the world.

As I sit here this morning my mind touches on many words that deal with yielding to You – submission, control, direct, guide, give over myself; and I’m sure there are many more. From a human perspective they, many times, have a negative connotation, slavery and servitude come to mind. But in my relationship with You the words are not negative but bring a sense of peace and security. For this relationship is not based on fear, or greed or hate or with intent to hurt and destroy. Our relationship is based on LOVE! I yield to You because I know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that You want what is best for me. And even though I may not always understand, You see the big picture of my life. I love You. I trust You. What better reason do I have for giving my life to You!
