Lukewarm? Bleh….

Father, I am up a little earlier than usual this morning in that sitting down to write yesterday just didn’t happen. Help me to focus and to be productive this morning. May this whole day from beginning to end be guided by You. Amen.

Revelation 3:14-16 (<<click the green)

Lukewarm…not very beneficial or tasteful on any front. Most of us, Lord, if we are familiar with any of the churches to which You communicated here at the beginning of Revelation, have heard of Laodicea. And with that name, we associate the word lukewarm – neither hot nor cold.

Thinking of beverages or food, at least in our culture, we often like them piping hot or ice cold. We like having our coffee topped off so it’s nice and hot. Fresh iced tea is wonderful but often the fresher it is the more quickly it melts the ice – “Can we have a glass of ice, please?”

My study Bible* shares that one of Laodicea’s big problems was its water supply. “At one time an aqueduct was built to bring water to the city from hot springs, but by the time the water reached the city, it was neither hot nor refreshingly cool – only lukewarm. The church had become as bland as the tepid water that came into the city.”

Lord, may I never be content with being lukewarm for it doesn’t bring satisfaction to You or anyone with whom I come in contact. My faith needs to be hot. It must be fresh from continued interaction with You. It needs to radiate the warmth of Your love. It needs to be vital and alive.

My interactions with others should also be as a cup of cool water on a scorching hot day. Others are thirsting for Your refreshing presence in their lives and many times they don’t even know what they are craving, trying this and that to quench their thirst – to no avail.

Lord, use me to touch the lives of others, giving them what they need of You. May I not be bland. May I not be lukewarm. May I make known to them the warmth of Your love and the refreshing coolness of Your compassion. Amen.

Morning Star

Good evening, Father! Overall today was a good day. It started catching up to me at the end of my shift but you enabled me to push through to the end. May what is left of this day be pleasing in Your eyes. Amen.

Revelation 2:24-29 (<<click green)

Lord, when I read this passage two things, in conjunction with each other, jumped out at me. One is a portion of verse 25, “hold tightly to what you have until I come.” And the other was a note from my study Bible* in regards to giving them the “morning star” if they “are victorious”. verses 26, 28

So I will remember my connection, the note states,

“Christ is also called the morning star in 22:16. A morning star appears just before dawn, when the night is coldest and darkest. When the world is at its bleakest point, Christ will burst onto the scene, exposing evil with his light of truth and bringing his promised reward.”

Lord, You put those two things together in a marvelous way! I know it is no surprise to You but it is very cool for me. I guess I never realized the significance of the morning star until I read that note. Many people feel that we are living in the last days of this earth. I don’t know and even You said. “Only the Father knows.” (verse 36b of Matthew 24:1-36)

My goal as one of Your many followers is to hold tightly to what I have until You come and to give the opportunity for many others to hold on as well. I must admit the world seems to be getting scarier every day that passes. But I refuse to be overwrought with fear! For I know the Morning Star and it may yet get colder and darker but, without the least inkling of doubt, I know You will burst on the scene…and all will be as it should. “Amen! Come, Lord Jesus!” (Revelation 22:20)

Cold World

It is a beautiful morning, Father – another gracious gift, one of an incalculable number of gifts, from Your almighty hand! All praise to my God and Creator! Amen!

Regardless of where we live, north or south, or the season in which we find ourselves, we live in a cold, cold world. So much pain and suffering, so much hate and violence, so much selfishness and greed – we are all chilled to the bone. Sin does that. We, in and of ourselves, can do nothing about it. We are condemned to suffer in a meaningless existence, frozen to the core.

I know it is spring – at least where I live – but all of John’s talk of love has brought this cold to mind.

I don’t recall meeting anyone who did not enjoy a crackling fire. In a fireplace inside or a fire ring outside, there is just something about a fire that draws you in. It is inviting. It is comforting. Regardless of gender, race or age, we like to sit and watch it do its thing, we enjoy basking in its warmth.

Love – real genuine love – does the same thing.

Lord, You are the source of all love, for You are love. 1 John 4:8, 16

“This is real love – not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.” v16

“We know how much God loves us, and we put our trust in his love.” v16

“We love each other because he loved us first.” v19

Lord, I may live in a cold, cold world but the fire of Your love within me dispels the cold. Cold has no power of its own – it cannot recreate itself. In actuality cold does not exist, it is merely the absence of heat. May I radiate the heat – the love – that you have placed within me. May I be a comfort to those in need, to the lost, the hurting…and the frozen. May they be drawn to You through me. And may they welcome Your fire in themselves so the cold may be banished in their lives, as well. Amen!

Fan into Flames

Father, I have a full day ahead of me and I lay it in Your hands. Help me to focus on what is truly important and to apply myself to accomplish the tasks at hand. Direct my thoughts, helping me to keep them in line with Your thoughts. As I prepare for worship this Sunday, help me to listen to where You would have me go. I am Your instrument – use me as You will. Amen.

2 Timothy 1:6-7 (<<click here)

Oh, Lord, You have given me specific spiritual gifts, talents and abilities uniquely blended just for me. Others may have similar gifts but none are just like mine. Help me, this day, to use them effectively. As Paul says may I continue to “fan into flames” those gifts. May I never let them grow cold from lack of use. May they glow with warmth that draws others to You from the chilly, and sometimes out right cold, world in which we find ourselves.

And, Lord, I would also pray that You would embolden me. You have not given me a “spirit of fear and timidity.” But You have given me “power” to accomplish whatever task is before me if it is routine or formidable. You’ve given us a spirit of “love” so that how we discharge our duties are flavored differently than the world. The “salt” we apply takes the blandness of life away and fills it with flavor. Then lastly, Lord, as You have already bent my mind to in my opening prayer, may the spirit of “self- discipline” make my work profitable for You and Your glory. Use me to impact the world for You!
