Yesterday was sure a mixed bag for me, Father. I enjoyed Your presence and am grateful You could use me. But later I felt my weaknesses inhibited what You wanted to happen. I was fearful and didn’t address an opportunity as I should have. And then in a separate incident, I was slighted and instead of finding comfort in You, I had to “discuss” it with others. I’m sorry… The only solution is to draw closer to You, so as to spend more time with You, so as to become more like You. Amen

How apropos the notes of my study Bible for this morning’s passage are for me today, Lord. Initially, Paul stood against the followers of the Way but You were able to turn him around. But now he is bold and rock solid in his relationship with You – no matter what is thrown at him. As yesterday clearly points out, that is not me. But, as my study Bible notes read, “we can remain confident that Christ will help our faith and love grow as our relationship with him deepens.”

I am dependent upon You, Lord. Please continue to draw me to Your side. I have no doubt that You love me and I truly believe that Your plan for me is victory – I will overcome the adversities of this life. I would ask that You would turn my detriments into determination! May Your name be forever praised my loving and patient Lord and Savior!

I Choose Joy

Sleep is heavy in my eyes this morning, Father, despite the cold water in my face. Help me to hear Your words for me this day.

If I were to ask anyone who has read the New Testament to any degree to give me a description of the Apostle John, I doubt anyone would describe him as dour, grumpy or melancholy. He most certainly would not be labeled with an Eeyore personality.

Even when I read today’s passage, Lord, I don’t see discouragement or anxiety – there is no doom and gloom mentality. Though I see the words “suffering” and “endurance” and “exiled”, in my mind’s eye I see a man of joy, determination, and love. The “disciple who Jesus loved” is much like his Master. His attitude toward life remains consistent regardless of his circumstances.

John was no more perfect that I am but at this point in his life – and he was probably in his 90’s – he had experienced enough of the ups and downs of life that there is no pretense. He is who he is – a man at peace with himself, his world and his Lord.

I pray, Lord, that I am like John – at least a good part of the time. I have never been imprisoned (Acts 4) or placed in exile but we all have our trials. I do lose my cool on occasion. I ponder my lot in life and wonder if it will ever change. Overall, I am content with wherever I find myself. But one thing I most definitely can attest to – this joy is not a natural response to my life and circumstances. My joy – as John’s – is found in my relationship with You, Lord.

The chorus of an old hymn comes to mind,

There is joy, joy
Joy in serving Jesus.
Joy that throbs within my heart

Every moment, every hour
As I draw upon His power
There is joy, joy
Joy that never shall depart.

May I ever draw upon Your power, Lord. Amen.

Hold Nothing Back

Father, there’s something special about this time of the day. The only thing my senses pick up is the muffled sound of vehicles zooming by. But in here it is quiet and peaceful, my day has only begun. And there is no better way to start my day than with You. In the quiet of this time may I hear Your still, small voice and may it set the tone for the day.

Lord, reading this brief passage has my mind going all kinds of directions. Help me to focus on what You want me to see and then please enable me to apply it to my life.

Fulfilling Your call on my life, Lord, is a worthy task. But though it is worthy, it does not mean that it will be easily attained. It doesn’t just happen. It’s not easy. Following You requires a solid determination. It will take daily focus and application .Living a life worthy of Your call, no goal is higher.

Paul’s examples of a soldier, an athlete and a farmer all point to individuals with high expectations. To achieve their goals means lots of hard work, discipline and self-sacrifice. Each of them must be all in – partial commitment won’t cut it! If I am to be an ambassador of the Good News I have to be all in or I won’t really be affective. I can say I follow You but until I totally invest myself in accomplishing that goal I will have little impact.

One of my struggles through life is seeing what You do with what I invest with my life. You can take a little and multiply it exponentially!

And there lies my struggle – quite often, even though I want my investment to be large it is small. I start off big and fizzle out way too early. What would it look like if I gave every bit of myself and stayed the course? What would You be able to do with that?

Lord, help me to be what I am capable of being! No more excuses! Empower me! Embolden me! Help me to give it my all and to hold nothing back!
