Lion Ahead of Me

There is such a peace that passes understanding being in Your hands, Father (Philippians 4:7). Help me to remain in the center of Your will this day and every day. Amen.

“So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the Lord your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you.” Deuteronomy 31:6

At many periods in our lives, we can look ahead and begin to feel overwhelmed. There is no end to the many things that could be included on this list. And they can be quite different for each of us. But, Lord, as I look ahead to what this week may hold, I turn to You.

This verse from Deuteronomy is part of Moses’ farewell speech to Joshua and the people of Israel. This was a time of great transition. There were on the verge of stepping into the land promised them. There were some “knowns” but many unknowns. Moses was driving home the fact that they were not going it alone.

He proclaims, For the Lord your God will personally go ahead of you.” God, himself, was personally going ahead of them! Anything and everything they would come up against would have to go through God first. There was no reason to be afraid. There was no reason to panic. It was proven over and over again that He would “neither fail…nor abandon” them.

Lord, this week is really no different than the 54 plus years of weeks I have gone through before. It is full of “knowns” and unknowns but regardless of what lays ahead absolutely everything I will come up against has to go through You first…and You have never failed or abandoned me. Help me to boldly go forward. May I be “strong and courageous” as I walk in Your strength and Your courage for there is nothing to fear, for You, Lord, the Lion of Judah, are personally going ahead of me! Thank You, Lord! Amen.

In Over My Head

What can I say, Father, yesterday was surely not one of my best days. But I am truly grateful for Your love. May my fortitude be strengthened as I carry on in following You. I find that strength only in You. And I cling to the fact that You will never leave me nor forsake me. Hebrews 13:5; Deuteronomy 31:6

Okay, I was going to move on to the next verse in James 4 but, Lord, You are leading me to share. That is not an easy thing to do but obedience is a major factor in our relationship…so here goes!

Yesterday I ______________. I don’t need to fill in the blank because every one of us can fill in the blank with something with which we struggle spiritually. We all have things we fight against, things that we can stand strong against day after day… as long as we walk close to You, Lord. Without You, we are done for. We cannot stand.

But there are times (and I am so grateful for Your strength in my life that those times are few and far between)… there are times when we sneak in little self-indulgence – just a glimpse, just sticking a toe into the very utmost edge of the lake. We’re not jumping; we’re not even just wading in a little – just the toe. Usually, we come to our spiritual senses and we ask forgiveness for the “toe” incident after we have scampered far, far away from the water’s edge. But on occasion, the lapping of the water on the shore lures us far too quickly to stick our toe in once again.

Your words of caution can be heard but we allow the lapping of the water to drown our Your words. The toe becomes an ankle, the ankle becomes a knee and then we’re in over our heads…ugh!

But here’s the part I want to stress. We all get in over our own heads. We painfully realize our sin (for that’s what it is!) but we can’t let it erase all the progress we’ve made up to that point!

Lord, you never leave us nor forsake us. Your hand is extended even as we are looking up to the surface. You want us to grasp Your hand. You want to pull us out. You want us to be overcomers. You don’t want us to fail. Your heart’s desire is to see us thrive!

Lord, help me to listen. Help me to obey. Help me to stay close to Your side. And help me to keep my toes from the water.

Consistentcy

Father, as we meet this morning I am so grateful for Your rock-solid consistency. As I think back over the last several months, I have been all over the place. I feel like a teenager in love. It sounds odd but at times I’ve been firmly committed, I wavered some here and there, too. I’ve felt closer to You than ever before and I’ve felt distant. You’ve been right here and I’ve been here, too, but I’ve bounced around a lot, too. Thank You for not giving up on me (not that You would) and for Your never failing love. Help me to love You deeper every day!

Hebrews 13:8-9 (<<click here)

Lord, there You go again! Reading vs. 8 made me chuckle. You continue to work in me (for which I am grateful) even when I’m clueless. My opening thoughts tie in so well! I am wishy-washy but Your word once again reminds me that You are “the same yesterday, today, and forever.” What assurance there is in that statement!

As human beings, we have a bent toward inconsistency. We’re hot, and then we’re cold. We are just all over the place. And this permeates every relationship in which we find ourselves – in families, our workplaces, churches, you name it and we experience a multitude of ups and downs. It makes it hard to navigate. It’s smooth sailing when out of nowhere there’s an iceberg – we’re “king of the world” and then we’re thrust into the icy cold waters of rejection.

Not so with You! You are never changing. Scripture is replete with statements of Your never-ending love (Psalm 136, Psalm 100:5, 1 Chronicles 16:34 to name a few). You’re always there when we need You – You will never leave us or forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:6).

Lord, this day may I be more like You. Help me win the battle against inconsistency. You are the example worth striving for!

Go Ahead of Me

Father, I am so grateful for…You. A verse comes to mind quite often and I realize in context it is a part of Moses’ farewell speech to the Israelites but it is equally as applicable to me (to all of us) this day.

“So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the Lord Your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you.” Deuteronomy 31:6

And then, too, from Paul’s writings to the Ephesians,

“For we are not fighting against flesh and blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:12

We literally live in a war zone. Some days are relatively quiet and other days we are fighting for our lives. The evil of this world is out to take us down by whatever means it can… and as Paul says this evil is not human – humanity is but a tool used to accomplish its nefarious ends.

Looking about before this day’s journey, I do not know what it will hold. For me the only sure thing of this day is that You, Lord, “will personally go ahead of” me. You “will neither fail… nor abandon” me. Help me to trust You. Help me feel the reality of Your love for me. Help me to be a reality of Your love in a world of hurt and dying people. Help me to reflect my Savior to a world who so desperately needs You.
