We Need Each Other

Father, Your love for me is more than my finite mind grasp! Thinking of the love between a parent and a child, which in many cases is one of the strongest loves on earth, hardly compares. Of course familial love is a reflection of Your love for us but Your love is so much deeper and far wider. Over and over again we let You down but You never fail to forgive. We hurt You in our disobedience but Your love is a constant! “Amazing Love! How can it be…?” Praise Your Holy Name!

2 Timothy 4:9 (<<click here)

Lord, we always seem to see Paul as one of Your most stalwart followers – strong in his convictions, an individual that we could count on, one we could go to for encouragement and support. He may have consistently emulated You to the world but he was not You – he was only human as am I.

The phrase, “Timothy, please come as soon as you can,” reflects very clearly his humanity. He is weary. He is lonely…and he yearns for Timothy’s companionship – his love, his encouragement, his presence.

Lord, You have created us first of all to need You. You fill the hole in our lives that absolutely nothing else will fill. No matter how hard we work at shoving other things in… But, Jesus, you have also created us to need each other. You are not inhibited by space or time but we surely are. Help me to be the encouragement that I need to be to my family, my friends, my congregants, my fellow workers, any customers and even total stranger who come across my path. I cannot be in all places at all times, as You, but use me to do what I can with Your help and directions. Amen.

Love Multiplies, It Doesn’t Divide

Father, I plead of You help me to never grow weary of our time together! May it always be refreshing, fulfilling, encouraging and inspirational.  As the years go by may I collect many journals and when I look back please let me see what I have matured and changed for the better because You have continues to work in my life. May my passion and desire for relationship with You only broaden, deepen as the days and months roll by! As the old hymn goes…

Deeper, deeper in the love of Jesus
Daily let me go;
Higher, higher in the school of wisdom
More of grace to know
O deeper yet, I pray
And higher every day
And wiser, blessed Lord,
In thy precious, holy Word.

– Charles P Jones, 1900
AMEN!

Colossians 4:7-18 (<<click here)

Paul’s closing of his letter to Colosse is full of encouragement. Even though he was imprisoned he was surrounded by many faithful friends who mutually supported each other and lifted up the Church. Lord, help me to continue to surround myself with those who would lift up Your kingdom, as well as, myself. And help me do the same for Your kingdom and them. Love, and sometimes tough love, should permeate it all. With You infilling us all, we are to encourage one another to keep the faith. We are to fervently persevere in prayer for one another. Being a hermit may work for a few but we are called a body for a reason – to work together, weak and strong, to build Your kingdom. Please give us wisdom and strength and patience and courage. And Your love must saturate it all – too much damage can be done without it. The love with which You infill us is a multiplier – without it division is inevitable. Help me, Lord, help us, Lord to be filled with You and to be about Your business.

White Flags

Father, this morning I gratefully come to be with You. You are with me every minute of the day and I am sorry to say that I don’t always acknowledge You. I strive to not ignore You when You prompt me to act or speak but so many times the world is loud and I cannot hear. Sometimes I am just running ahead of You. It makes me think of a child and his mother. But even a child learns to hear his mother’s voice over the din of the crowd. And even a child learns not to run too far ahead so as to seperate himself into danger.

Father, Fanny Crosby said it well, “I am Thine, O Lord, I have heard Thy voice, And it told thy love to me; But I long to rise in the arms of faith and be closer drawn to thee. Draw me nearer, nearer blessed Lord…”

Father, with all my heart I want this to be my cry. I’m Yours,  Lord, I hear Your voice and it says You love me. But I don’t want to stay where I am – I want to be lifted up “in the arms of faith” just to be closer to You. Pull me closer to You every day. Show me Your heart so that I’m drawn to You. Amen – so be it.

Colossians 3:18-19 (<<click here)

Lord, this is definitely one of those passages that has been misunderstood on a lot of fronts. We see words like “submit” and all kinds of red flags go up! Lord, You didn’t intend for there to be red flags but white flags. When we surrender ourselves to Your love, You call us to serve You in love. And in so doing we will love others and serve them in love. All of our relationships should be driven by love!  – husband/wives, parents/children, employers/employees. Whatever relationship we find ourselves in must be governed by love.

I will not demand my own way if I truly love. I will not hurt, I will not tear down, I will not berate. I will help, I will lift up, I will encourage.

Lord, fill up my love reserves! Help me today to love – no hesitations, no holding back, no limits! Help me to love, for You surely love me – it’s the least I can do!

Prayer…a Powerful Thing

What a beautiful morning, Father! Thank You, for Your many blessings – for the exquisite detail of Your creation, for my home, the food on my table, my life, my abilities and my family. That’s just the tip of the enormous iceberg – for Your blessings are deep! Wide! Help me to live my life in that reality and to be grateful every moment!

Colossians 1:1-14 (<<click here)

Lord, I am struggling this morning. Things on my mind are distracting me, they are inhibiting me from concentrating on Your Word and focusing on what You want to say to me, help me.

Prayer…is a powerful thing. It obviously is how we interact, Lord. It is the way I speak with You and in the midst of that my desire is that I am attentive enough to hear You speak to me. It’s how we lift others up to You, their needs and struggles. Just mentioning that we are praying for others is an encouragement for them. Lord, help me to pray more effectively, help me to hear Your voice more clearly. Give me the assurance that it is You that I am hearing and the courage to act upon that Word. In this passage Paul mentions praying for the Colossians three times and it is full of love and encouragement. It is also full of formational Truth.

Lord, I know You hear all my prayers but I know I need to pray more like Paul. Help me to do more than to go through a list of names with a little thought of each one. Help my prayers to have depth and to weigh them with foundational truth. Bring to mind Your Word as I pray, enable me to link them together, claim Your promises, empowering myself and those for whom I am praying to be filled with Your power and wisdom and for all of us to be changed because we have been touched by You!
