Building Materials

I have come this morning to bask in Your presence, to soak up the warmth of Your love, to be filled to the cusp of my being with Your wisdom and to begin the process of being a channel to the world by which You can disperse these great blessings to the world. Please help me to treasure our time together more and more.

Ephesians 2:19-22 (<<click the green )

God’s family is compared to as “God’s house”. We are part of something far greater than ourselves or even our local church.  We are part of a structure begun long ago by God himself. Our foundation is the apostles and the prophets and Christ is the cornerstone. We are not some hodgepodge of odds and ends thrown together with the hope of it all “miraculously” making sense, but (as the NLT puts it), “We are carefully joined together in [Christ]” – no happenstance, no luck, no pipe dreams but CAREFULLY assembled for a specific purpose. As the notes on this passage alluded to, this is so the world can see who God really is (LOVE!) and that harmony can be achieved – through Christ!

Oh, Great Master Builder, help me to fit into Your master plan. Help me to be used for Your purpose. Enable me to bring to You other useful “material” – others – who will allow themselves to be used by You to be a “building” that all the world can see and be drawn to for Your glory!

Today’s picture is of a home being constructed by a group of men from the Cypress Bible Church in Cypress, Texas  for two families in Juarez, Mexico.  My brother-in-law Chuck is on the far right and my son, Massey, is behind the camera. 🙂

Skin of My Teeth

Father, thank You for an absolutely beautiful day! The sun is shining and it sure cheers the soul! Thank You for the wonderful gifts of creation!

1 Peter 4:4-6 (<<click here)

We are all guilty of doing things that we shouldn’t do. At least in this physical world, there are many things for which we are never held accountable. We get away with a lot. Sometimes they are things we do, words we speak. How many times would we be in big trouble if what we thought was out there for all to see or hear? Our spouse may not know all that we are guilty of or our boss or parents or friends or children and we think we are getting away scot-free but nothing could be further from the truth.

Every thought, every deed, every word, every glance…Lord, You know every single one of them! And there will come a day when we will have to face You and we will be judged for it all. And we will all be judged. We will be held accountable for our actions. And there will be no more excuses. We will be unable to blame anyone else. It will all be on us.

Those who have believed in You will find salvation in You…but we will still be judged for what we have done or haven’t’ done. We all build on one foundation – and that is You, Lord. No other foundation can be laid. 1 Corinthians 3:12-15 tells us what will happen to the materials, with which we choose to build,

12Anyone who builds on that foundation may use a variety of materials—gold, silver, jewels, wood, hay, or straw. 13But on the judgment day, fire will reveal what kind of work each builder has done. The fire will show if a person’s work has any value. 14If the work survives, that builder will receive a reward. 15But if the work is burned up, the builder will suffer great loss. The builder will be saved, but like someone barely escaping through a wall of flames.

That last sentence makes me think of the phrase “by the skin of my teeth.” Of course there is no skin on my teeth but I realize that I need to be diligently working to things that will last for eternity. Material wealth, popularity are “wood, hay, or straw” and be “burned up.” Lord, when it comes time to stand before You my labors be made of “gold, silver, [and] jewels.” May what I do be worthy of Your name. Amen.

Built on Rock

Today is the beginning of a new year (For me at least!) So Father, I would ask for Your help in making this a year in which we grow closer together. I realize that You are putting forth Your all. I would ask that You would enable me to give You every part of everyday – guide me. Help me to listen and act according to Your will. There is no better way!

Titus 1:9 (<<click here)

Lord, I am so grateful for the solid foundations that You have given me to build my life upon. You of course, are the rock upon which everything else is built. Because of the wonderful gift of salvation, You have extended, I am who I am today – praise Your holy name!

I have every reason to have “a strong belief in the trustworthy message”– that is the Good News of the forgiveness of sins because of Your sacrifice.

As I continue to prepare for the awesome responsibility of leading Your children, please guide my thoughts, fill my heart with Your love and continue to draw me deeper into fellowship with You. May I be the encourager that I need to be and may I show those who don’t believe in You the error of their ways in a loving manner. Enable me to be like You when I interact with those around me wherever I may be.

Pillar of Truth

Father, “Great is Thy Faithfulness” is something I believe with all my heart. “I Am Weak, but Thou Art Strong.”- I am so grateful that I was able to firmly stand in Your strength yesterday. Praising Your Holy Name! Thank You for that and so many other things yesterday, a beautiful day with my beautiful wife, safe travels a great time with my family, good food and all the other blessing You bestow upon me each and every day!

1 Timothy 3:14-15 (<<click here)

Lord, where would we be without Your Word? From the beginning of creation through the divinely inspired writers of the New Testament, such as Paul, You have given us a solid foundation upon which to build our lives, for You truly are “the pillar and foundation of the truth.” I am grateful that we have clear direction as to how we “must conduct [ourselves] in the household of God.” And even though Your word is thousands of years old and was written in totally different cultures than which I live, I can still apply it and learn from it today! Thank You for Your external word! As King David said in Psalm 86:11-12.

“Teach me Your Ways, O Lord,
that I may live according to your truth!
Grant me purity of heart,
so I may honor you.
With all my heart I will praise you, O Lord my God.
I will give glory to your name forever…

What better way to live my life!

Strong and True

Father, help me to always keep You at the forefront of my life. Through thick and thin, help me to follow You with my whole heart, holding nothing back. Struggles and heartache will surely come but help me to cling to You. Wonderful blessings will surely come, as well, but in those times let the glory go to You and You alone!

Colossians 2:6-7 (<<click here)

…continue to follow CHRIST

…let your roots grow down in CHRIST

…build your lives on CHRIST

Doing these things will cause our faith to grow stronger in truth and will cause our thankfulness to overflow!

Lord, there’s a lot in these two verses! If I am consistent in following You (continue) I will be solidly grounded (roots grow down) and will be enabled to build on You as a solid foundation that will not be moved – my contribution to the building of Your kingdom will be strong and true.

Yesterday’s Our Daily Bread reading ties in here! Deuteronomy 8:11-20 stresses that when we take the credit for the blessings You’ve given us that we will fail! I can’t take the building materials You give me and use them to build what I want, where I want.  A weak foundation and shoddy construction only lead to calamity! When I am obedient and give You the credit my faith will remain strong and gratitude will come naturally.

Lord, help me to always be looking to You for guidance and wisdom and strength and courage to accomplish the tasks a hand. Fill my thoughts and actions, so I will be a light for You shining brightly in a dark world!
