Bit by a Roaring Lion

Father, so many times in life I have sung of my anchor holding in the storms of life. And Father I claim that as truth. In the struggles and heartaches of life, You are surely a solid rock and a sure foundation. I am so grateful for the security of our relationship. But anchoring in You has another dimension as well. Many times in my life my connection to You – my anchor holding fast in You – has been the lifeline to pull me back, for as another old hymn state “prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, Prone to leave the God I love.”

Too many times I have strayed just far enough away that I can pretend that I can’t hear Your voice calling for my return. But whatever has caught my fancy soon proves to be unfulfilling and shallow and once again my anchor brings me back to You. Thank You, Father, for Your unwavering love!

1 Thessalonians 2:17-20 (<<click the green)

Paul, a rock-solid devout believer in the power of the resurrected Christ, attributed his inability to return to the church at Thessalonica to Satan. We don’t know what he did to hinder Paul – but we need to learn from Paul.

Peter clearly states that the devil “prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.” (1 Peter 5:8) and he surely is out to get us. Lord, You know this is an ongoing struggle for me. I have no doubt whatsoever that he exists. I guess I’ve always felt that we empower him too much. This goes back pretty far but I can still recall one of comedian Flip Wilson’s catchphrases, “The devil made me do it.” For years I have balked at that – he can’t make me do anything! But he can sure provide plenty of enticements! So I might not get “devoured” but I’ve been bitten plenty of times!

I consciously strive to undermine the devil’s power. He may impact people all over the world but he cannot be all places at once – his demonic hoard does his bidding. He cannot know everything – though he’s been around long enough to have us pegged pretty well. And he is not all-powerful  – he may have the ability to do what he wants – but he is surely limited and he does lose.

He is a foe to be reckoned with and he will surely wreak havoc in our lives BUT… he will not prevail and I am determined, only in You, Lord, to stand against him!

“I need Thy presence every passing hour;
What but Thy grace can foil the tempter’s power?
Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me.”

“Abide with Me” words by Henry F. Lyte, 1847

Lion Ahead of Me

There is such a peace that passes understanding being in Your hands, Father (Philippians 4:7). Help me to remain in the center of Your will this day and every day. Amen.

“So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the Lord your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you.” Deuteronomy 31:6

At many periods in our lives, we can look ahead and begin to feel overwhelmed. There is no end to the many things that could be included on this list. And they can be quite different for each of us. But, Lord, as I look ahead to what this week may hold, I turn to You.

This verse from Deuteronomy is part of Moses’ farewell speech to Joshua and the people of Israel. This was a time of great transition. There were on the verge of stepping into the land promised them. There were some “knowns” but many unknowns. Moses was driving home the fact that they were not going it alone.

He proclaims, For the Lord your God will personally go ahead of you.” God, himself, was personally going ahead of them! Anything and everything they would come up against would have to go through God first. There was no reason to be afraid. There was no reason to panic. It was proven over and over again that He would “neither fail…nor abandon” them.

Lord, this week is really no different than the 54 plus years of weeks I have gone through before. It is full of “knowns” and unknowns but regardless of what lays ahead absolutely everything I will come up against has to go through You first…and You have never failed or abandoned me. Help me to boldly go forward. May I be “strong and courageous” as I walk in Your strength and Your courage for there is nothing to fear, for You, Lord, the Lion of Judah, are personally going ahead of me! Thank You, Lord! Amen.

Whole World in His Hands

A foggy morning greets me as I sit for our time together, Father. It is beautiful to behold. All the nuances of Your creation are a constant reminder of Your power and might and Your attention to detail. Your hand in creation is a great reassurance that Your hand is upon my life as well. Thank You, Father.

Revelation 5:1-5 (<<click the green)

In the midst of this scene of power and might and holiness, with everyone lifting praise deservingly to God, stands a strong and mighty angel. And in reference to a sealed scroll which God holds in His hand, he shouts in loud voice,

“Who is worthy to break the seals on this scroll and open it?” vs2

The Amplified Bible puts it this way,

“Who is worthy to open the scroll? And [who is entitled and deserves and is morally fit] to break its seals?” vs2

And because no one in all of heaven or earth or under the earth stepped forward, the Apostle John wept bitterly.

But one of the twenty-four elders said to [John], “Stop weeping! Look, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the heir to David’s throne, has won the victory. He is worthy to open the scroll and its seven seals.” vs5

I realize that that is a lot of introduction but as I write, Lord, it must be stressed that only You, the Lion of Judah, are worthy. In all of eternity both forward and backward only You were able to live a life of perfect obedience to God. Only You were able to pay the penalty for the sins of all humanity by dying on the cross. Only You in Your resurrection proclaimed Your power over evil and death! And because only You “won the victory,” only You “can be trusted with the world’s future”!*

A song from my childhood comes to mind. The repeated line of the first verse says it all, “He’s got the whole world in his hands.”

No matter where we find ourselves in our life’s journey, Lord, we are safely in Your hands…and that is where I want to remain. Amen.

Truly Worthy

Morning has come, Father, and You have so graciously awoken me. You know how important our time together is and I am eager to do so no matter how much my bed may call out to me. Bless our time together, Father. Amen.

Revelation 4:6-11 (<<click the green)

Lord, there is much symbolism here. Just reading it is overwhelming and I can only imagine how the Apostle John felt. Just trying to visualize the “four living beings” in my in mind sends it reeling. But reading my study Bible* notes enables me to focus.

The entirety of Revelation points to You, Lord – who You are, what You have done and are doing and what You will do. You are the creator of everything that is – regardless of what we try to say. You are the sovereign Lord of it all and if we acknowledge it now or not there will come a day when we all will do so for there will be no room for denial.

These “four living beings”? They symbolize Your attributes – Your qualities and character. They lead us in worshipping You by proclaiming Your holiness. The lion symbolizes majesty and power, the ox symbolizes faithfulness, the human symbolizes intelligence, and the eagle sovereignty.

They and the “twenty-four elders” show us “where, why, and how to praise God.” We stop focusing on ourselves and focus on You – our perspectives are lifted from the “earthly to the heavenly.”

May these words guide me to praise You as well,

Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God, the Almighty—
the one who always was, who is, and who is still to come.” vs8

“You are worthy, O Lord our God,
to receive glory and honor and power.
For you created all things,
and they exist because you created what you pleased.” vs11

Amen.

I Am a LION!

A brisk morning to come and sit with You, Father, but my heart is warmed by Your presence.

1 John 4:4-6 (<<click here)

“…the Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world.” v4b

Lord, if we sit and think too long on the rampant evil and wickedness that surrounds us, it is way too easy to become fearful. And if we are not careful we become immobilized. Like turtles, we withdraw into our shells thinking we can just hide from it all.

Now I admit evil and wickedness are way strong that I am…but I am no longer a child of evil and wickedness. I am a child of the Lion of Judah and Your Spirit, oh Lord, lives in me. Evil and wickedness may be stronger than me but You are “greater than the spirit who lives in the world.”

So, Lord, as I look about me, yes it’s scary – it’s overwhelming. But I am not a turtle. I am a LION for I am Yours! And that means, in You, I am brave. In You I am powerful. No matter how much evil make shake the rafters…and may want to shake me, as well, but I will stand firm in the fact that I have peace in You.

You proclaimed in John 16:33,

“Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”

Amen – so be it!
