Yeilding

Father, thank You for a good night’s rest, I would ask that Your hand would be upon me this day and that I would be focused and that my preparations for worship Sunday would align with what You want to accomplish. Work through me to advance Your kingdom here on earth.

Lord, may I never cease to be astonished at how You work in my life! I sit down and write out my opening prayer, before reading this morning’s text and already You are guiding my thoughts in the directions it should go! Praise You, Lord!

I’m to “Let the message about [You], in all its richness, fill [my life].” I’m to “teach and council… with all the wisdom” You give me. You direct me in my song selections for worship. I am so grateful that You work in my life. Help me to keep in mind at all times that I am Your representative to the world.

As I sit here this morning my mind touches on many words that deal with yielding to You – submission, control, direct, guide, give over myself; and I’m sure there are many more. From a human perspective they, many times, have a negative connotation, slavery and servitude come to mind. But in my relationship with You, the words are not negative but bring a sense of peace and security. For this relationship is not based on fear, or greed or hate or with intent to hurt and destroy. Our relationship is based on LOVE! I yield to You because I know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that You want what is best for me. And even though I may not always understand, You see the big picture of my life. I love You. I trust You. What better reason do I have for giving my life to You!

Love of Money

This is a big day, Father, things to be wrapped up this morning then a drive to the airport as we head out to see our boy! Be with us as we travel. Please, keep us safe. Lay Your hand upon our shoulders that we follow Your leading each day; that though we are away for some time off that we would continue to attune ourselves to how You would have us live. Fill us with love, may we be considerate, may we be compassionate. May the children shine forth their Father’s influence and do You proud.

Lord, I think our tendency is to play these concepts down. If someone were to ask me if I loved money, I would say, “no.” I just want to make sure our needs are met for the here and now and to assure that we can make it when we can no longer punch the time clock, I wouldn’t say I loved money… but I am quite fond of security. Are they the same thing? Maybe not technically but it’s sure easy for them to control my life.

A lot of it has to do with our attitude about it all. Am I so intent concerning my security that I care little about the needs of others? Am I so diligent in securing my future that I neglect to put my faith in God’s ability to meet my needs? And even if I do trust You to meet those needs, am I not really satisfied with what I receive. “Oh, God, I wanted the green one not the red one!” We can be pretty shallow and selfish.

Lord, help me to trust You more. As Your Word says, You “own the cattle on a thousand hills.” Psalm 50:10 And as I am well aware that is a very all-encompassing statement. There is absolutely, no need that You cannot meet. Help me to be diligent in my labors and enable me to be a good steward with the resources You have so generously bestowed. May I be “satisfied with what I have.” vs.5

Security

As I look out over the weekend, Father, there is much yet to be done and I welcome Your company. Many routine things will take place but there is nothing from which I would exclude You. Fill my heart and mind with You. May Your glory shine through even amongst the mundane! Amen!

Hebrews 12:25-29 (<<click here)

Pursuing security is not limited to any cultural socio-economic or particular time in history, present, past or future. How we define security may vary but our pursuit of it does not.

The scary thing is that nothing we invest in on any earthly front is a sure thing. Calamity and circumstances beyond our control in the blink of an eye can take it all away!!

But Lord, there’s one thing that is worthy of all our trust. Only one thing is unshakable – and that is You. Finding our security in You will sustain us throughout eternity. This old world is doomed to destruction…and recreation. So everything we cling to here will cease to exist. Our souls are the only things we possess that are eternal, all else will perish.

Lord, may we listen to You. May we abide in what You have to say. Matthew 24:35 reads, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.”

Longing for Good

Oh my, what a week – it seems like forever since I’ve sat down with You, Father! And, boy, do I feel it! The world has been none to kind – crazy work schedule and weariness has made coming together easier to say “no” to and my defenses are not as sharp so things lurking in the shadows have tripped me up. Thank You, Father, for once again helping me to my feet and in your forgiveness, to march steadily onward. (The journey of John Bunyan’s, Christian in The Pilgrim’s Progress, comes to mind)

2 Timothy 3:17  (<<click here)

Lord, I was ready to forge on ahead to chapter 4 but my eyes fell upon the last footnote for chapter 3 in my Study Bible* and I had to pause.

“We should not study God’s Word simply to increase our knowledge… We should study the Bible so that we will know how to do Christ’s work in the world. Our knowledge of God’s Word is not useful unless it strengthens our faith and leads us to do good.”

Lord, help Your Word to not just fill my brain – though that is important – but may it fill my life; may it be fleshed out in daily tasks from beginning to end. The truth of Your Word is not meant to be something that I keep to my self – it is to be shared. Your Word is fully able to “equip” me “to do every good work.”

And isn’t this for what the world is longing? Don’t we all crave and long for “good”? – love, acceptance, security, beauty (real beauty), peace, joy. And aren’t all of these things found in You. The world offers plenty of knock offs but only You offer the genuine article. May I be a purveyor of “good work.”
