O Be Careful Little Mouth What You Say
Father, as I look over this day, there really wasn’t anything too much out of the norm. Yet even on these kinds of days, I pray that I am open to your direction. I pray that I am a good reflection of You, whatever the case may be. Amen.

I started to continue in Acts but decided to go another route for this week’s last post. As I thought about that, a few recent incidents on my bus came to mind.
First, let me share a verse that came to mind while pondering these things. (And just for the record, I am not Super Bible Man. The first phrase of this passage came to mind, but I had to look it up. That gave me the specific reference and filled in the rest of the passage.)
Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
Be acceptable and pleasing in Your sight,
O Lord, my [firm, immovable] rock and my Redeemer. Psalm 19:14 AMP
One of the things that bother me most on my bus is when kids are nasty to each other. For the most part, I don’t hear what they say but never fear, tattlers are always near! I regularly have students come up to me and tell me so-and-so said such-and-such – many times they are breaking the rules by walking up to me while I am picking kids up or dropping kids off. (They’re supposed to stay safely in their seats!)
I don’t appreciate tattling but pretty regularly it helps me address issues, even if it’s in a more general way.
There was quite a lot going on on my bus this afternoon on my elementary route. Some things have been brewing and today and a few of them boiled over! I don’t appreciate kids saying hurtful things to other kids. Oft times, they are being mean, just to be mean. I had one girl get off in tears yesterday. (I tried to address it this afternoon while we were waiting to leave. It’s not easy talking to kids to any great extent while they are getting on or off the bus – I have to maintain a pretty tight schedule.)
Anyway, the whole bus is probably going to get a lecture tomorrow. It will basically be a Golden Rule sermon minus the religious terminology. God’s truths can be communicated without it being all gussied up in church-speak.
So, as my mind is going down this trail of thought and what I need they need to hear, the Lord looks me square in the eye and says, “What about you?” Uh…me? “Yes…you.”
Well…it didn’t take long to figure out what He was referring to. I have shared before that one of my ongoing struggles is dealing with my attitude when I drive. Sometimes I don’t say things out loud but far too often I do. And when it comes right down to it, words like “idiot”, “buffoon”, “idjit”, and “dufus” aren’t any better than any curse words out there. They’re just different. It still expresses a disdain for others…other individuals that were created and loved by our Heavenly Father. There’s no place for that mindset and I needed a Golden Rule sermon…and the Holy Spirit was happy to oblige.
Lord Jesus, once again I would ask that You help me to see people with Your eyes. May there be love and not contempt for others. May Your love fill me and overflow! Amen.

Turn the World Upside Down – Part 2
I realize that time moves forth at its steady pace, but it just seems like this year can’t be almost done. Father, I pray that in these last few days You will be able to use me to bring glory, not to myself, but to You. Amen.
Acts 1:1-5 (<<click here to read the passage)
So, was turning the world upside down just a thing that the early followers of Christ were able to do, or are we able to accomplish great world-changing things for God’s Kingdom, too?
Well, I think we are equal to them in the areas of being ordinary, wouldn’t you? Just as they were, we are frail. And when it comes to limitations, I for one excel in that area! How about you?
But there is one key ingredient that we cannot do without. If we do not have the Holy Spirit infilling and directing us, if we’re not submissive to those things, we cannot help but fail. It’s not a cakewalk for sure, but if fishermen, tax collectors, and tent makers succeeded in allowing the Holy Spirit’s influence upon their lives, so can we!
If we are followers of Christ, His Spirit fills us. We are walking examples of the Gospel – the Good News. Jesus took upon Himself our sin, and when we in faith accepted His gracious gift of forgiveness, salvation was ours…and that is the Good News!
In my initial research, I came across an excellent article entitled, 3 Ways to Turn the World Upside Down (click the title to read the article), but I want to just hit the highlights.
I wrote that Paul and Silas were said to be “men who have turned the world upside down…” Acts 17:6 AMP So, with the Holy Spirit guiding them, what did they do? There are very practical and tangible things that played a major role in them impacting the world for the Kingdom.
1) They saw.
If we want to be used by God to turn the world upside down, it starts with seeing. It starts with simply opening our eyes and being observant of the culture around us. It starts with asking God to show us what He’s seeing.
We can’t see if all we do is stay locked in our homes with a computer screen or TV in front of us. May God open our eyes…at work, at school, out shopping, even in church. May we see with His eyes and may it motivate us to act.
2) They spoke.
They turned the world upside down because they simply dialogued with people. They had conversations.
We struggle here. Our goal should be to have intentional dialogue with whomever God places in our path. If He leads us there, He can use us there. No theological degree is required, just speak of what God has done for us, in simple, easy-to-understand terms. Pray, and God will honor our efforts.
So, I would suggest that we focus on seeing what God sees – pray for that! – and pray also for boldness and grace. That’s what’s holding us back, isn’t it? We’re scared to talk. What if we’re rejected? What if we’re laughed at? What if we fail…again?
“What ifs” just hold us back. Pray and then step out on faith knowing that the Holy Spirit will never leave our side! He’ll be with us every step of the way. But He can’t use us if we don’t put ourselves out there.
And that’s how the world is turned upside down. God does it by using us for we are far more than useless!

Turn the World Upside Down
Father, once more I’ve been asked to bring some closure to a family who has suffered loss. It is a few days out, but I would ask that You would guide my thoughts and planning. May my words bring glory to You. Amen.
Acts 1:1-5 (<<click here to read the passage)
Dr. Luke picks up where he left off in the Gospel he penned under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and this account is referred to as the Acts of the Apostles.
This account begins with the same men with which the Gospel ended. They are still ordinary people – like you and me – with human frailties and limitations – again like you and me. The only thing that changed – and “only” is a very, very inadequate term to use – but the only thing that changed was that now instead of being just ordinary people, from this point on they are empowered by the Holy Spirit! God Himself infills us to accomplish things never before possible. In fact, His infilling enables us to accomplish things never even dreamed of before!
When the angel spoke with Mary about her pending pregnancy with the Savior of the world, he said,
“The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you…” Luke 1:35 AMP
That union brought forth Jesus. But now the same thing will happen to His followers – first the disciples, then others…many others – including you and me!
Yes, we are ordinary, frail, and limited, but as the angel went on to say to Mary,
“For with God nothing [is or ever] shall be impossible.” Luke 1:37 AMP (emphasis mine)
And when God’s hands are on something, and those involved are fully given over to His will and direction for their lives, things begin to happen, and nothing can stop Him! Just a few chapters down the line, Paul and Silas are said to be “men who have turned the world upside down…” Acts 17:6 AMP
And we, like them, can do the same! Wouldn’t that be great? …so why aren’t we? Well, I hate to leave you hanging but I think this is going to be a two-parter! Make sure you check out tomorrow’s post to get some direction on how we, too, can turn the world upside down!

The Pivot Point

(The concept is totally unrelated but this is a Light Seesaw – check it out here!)
Wow, a breather day! That is a rare but much-appreciated blessing, Father. A Monday after a long weekend makes the upcoming week much easier to head into!
Acts 1:1-11 (<<click here to read the passage)
It’s sort of weird to think about but as we have now completed the Gospels, winding everything up with the end of John’s writings, we now will enter the writings that Dr. Luke has given us in the Book of Acts.
The Book of Acts is transitional. In a lot of ways, it is a pivot point. One thing that I have come to understand is that time sits in the middle of eternity. God and everything associated with Him, has always existed. He has never not existed.
There are many passages of Scripture that speak of this. Isaiah 40:28 for example states,
Do you not know? Have you not heard?
The Everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth
Does not become tired or grow weary
There is no searching of His understanding. AMP
In Revelation 1:8 the Lord God proclaims,
“I am the Alpha and the Omega [the Beginning and the End… “Who is [existing forever] and Who was [continually existing in the past] and Who is to come, the Almighty [the Omnipotent, the Ruler of all].” AMP
And we can’t forget what the Apostle Paul had to say, under the Holy Spirit’s inspiration, in Ephesians 1:4,
Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. NLT
Before time began, God set into motion our salvation. So, from day one – literally – everything was moving to the point of our redemption – and that is what Christ accomplished with His death on the cross and with His resurrection! At this point, the world experienced the end of the beginning – from “In the beginning…” (Genesis 1:1) to “It is finished!” (John 19:30)
And now with Jesus’ return to glory to sit at His Father’s right hand – the pivot point! – we entered the beginning of the end!
It’s not the end of everything mind you, but only the end of time. Time began at Creation, and it will end with Christ’s Second Advent, that is, His second coming! When we all stand before God at the Great Judgement, time will be no more. And when time has ended, so will our opportunity to choose, as we spoke of in yesterday’s post, Each of Us Is the Juror. Our choice will have been made and there will be no undoing it!
We may not want to think about it but, ready or not, the end will come. (If you’d be interested, click on this link to listen to my sermon for the First Sunday in Advent, SLOWING DOWN FOR REFLECTION. It will flesh out the concept of being ready a bit more.)
Lord Jesus, help us to be prepared. All the world has been headed toward the end since You stepped back into Your Father’s presence. May we ready ourselves and be diligent in pointing others to You, so that they may be ready, as well! Amen.

Each of Us Is the Juror
A full day, Father, and a full heart as well. So many going through so much. I pray that they would find solace in You and that Your people would be Your hands as You bring them comfort. Amen.
John 21:24-25 (<<click here to read the passage)
One thing that I have always wanted to do is to serve on a jury. I’ve received numerous notifications, but never once have I been selected. I suppose being a pastor may factor in, but I can’t do much about that. Personally, I would find the whole operation very interesting…maybe someday!
The author of this Gospel, the Apostle John, wrote of himself,
This is the same disciple who is testifying to these things and has recorded them; and we know [without any doubt] that his testimony is true.
And there are also many other things which Jesus did, which if they were recorded one by one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that would be written. AMP
John, like an astute attorney, set out to plead his case efficiently and thoroughly. He clearly stated, as is recorded in chapter 20, verses 30-31,
There are also many other signs (attesting miracles) that Jesus performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these have been written so that you may believe [with a deep, abiding trust] that Jesus is the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed), the Son of God; and that by believing [and trusting in and relying on Him] you may have life in His name. AMP
He wanted to prove, beyond any doubt that Jesus was the Son of God. Jesus said it, and John clearly and systematically presented the evidence for Jesus’ claims.
And in this case, each one of us is the juror. We must thoroughly examine the evidence presented and we are compelled to make a judgment…is Jesus the Son of God, or isn’t he? *
Interestingly enough, we are also the defendant in that our own decision will find us receiving the death penalty for our sin or pardon in full.
The Apostle Paul in Romans 6:23 clearly states,
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God [that is, His remarkable, overwhelming gift of grace to believers] is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. AMP
When we stand before God on that great day of judgment our decision on this matter will be the deciding factor on where we will spend eternity. No one else can be blamed if our own choice did not relieve us of our guilt. It will not be an eternal party with all of our “friends” of like mind, but eternal torment. We will be forever separated from God who did absolutely everything within His power to redeem us.
Lord Jesus, may we take our responsibility seriously to determine who You are. It is an eternal life or death decision that we must make. Open our eyes and our hearts to the reality of who You are. Amen.
