Power of Forgiveness

forgiveness

A little out of the ordinary coming to sit with You mid-morning, Father, but regardless I am here and am eager to begin our time together.

James 2:12-13 (<<click here)

Lord, You led me to speak on forgiveness this past Sunday and this passage ties right in. Why do we struggle so with showing mercy to those we feel have wronged us? This mindset crosses all barriers – every human being deals with it. And we all have thoughts of retaliation.

Our world is an absolute mess. I truly believe that a majority of the world’s ills can trace their origins back to unforgiveness. We hold grudges against moms and dads and siblings and teachers and coaches and law enforcement and pastors and on and on and on! They hurt me! They neglected me! They shoved me down – then they kicked me! And it builds and builds until we can’t take it anymore. And sometimes we explode! Maybe we let loose a verbal deluge on someone close to us…or for that matter a total stranger! Road rage! Drive by shootings! Pain – hurt – revenge!! AHHH!!!

And the only thing that can stop it is loveYour love! When we begin to understand Your love for us – when it starts to sink in how much we have hurt You and that You still went to the cross to pay the price for our sin then we can begin to forgive.

Our sins against You are literally incalculable!! I can’t even begin to add up my sins for the past week; much less my lifetime and You don’t hold back Your love and forgiveness. It is freely given…and gratefully received…

So how can I do any less? All of humanity will never hurt me as much as I have hurt You…

Lord, help me to show mercy. Help me to forgive. Please, fill me with Your love. Amen.

Honor Marriage

Father, there are so many crazy, alarming things happening across the world. And for the most part I cannot do one thing about them. The one thing I can do I will do. I will continue to acknowledge Your lordship over it all. I will pray that Your will would be done and that people would see that hope and security is found only in You.

Hebrews 13:4 (<<click here)

“Give honor to marriage…”

In an “all about me” culture this is a great challenge. Our overwhelming tendency is to look out only for ourselves and if it isn’t too inconvenient we’ll look out for others as well… maybe.

Lord, I truly believe that one of clearest testimonies of how Your love works is a strong marriage based on You. Karen and I have our struggles but overall I’d say we have a solid, loving relationship. I believe we strive to think of the other. We care for each other. We pray for each other. We encourage one another. Sure we’ve gone through hard times, we’ve said and done stupid, hurtful things but we have also sought out and extended forgiveness – with You and each other.

As with all things on this side of eternity, the key to a successful marriage is to acknowledge the fact that we, in and of ourselves, cannot do it. We must include You in the equation. Only in giving ourselves over to You can we give ourselves over to each other.

Lord, help me to continue deepening my relationship with You. Help me to continue deepening my relationship with Karen. May we as individuals and a couple be all You want us to be. Amen.

I Am a Cup

It’s hard to believe that what caused me to wake up several times this morning for fear I would miss is something I wasn’t even thinking of doing a year ago! But Father I do not want to miss our special time together. Granted at this point the compulsive part of my personality may be making a contribution but it’s all good! Father, You made me and whatever it takes to get me up and at it with You is fine by me! Bless our time together; speak to me for I am listening…

I’m not exactly sure what he said, but a radio preacher got my mind going down a certain track. Then end result was – I am a cup. (Profound, huh?) At the beginning of each day I get to fill it with whatever I want. It is a choice but it is also possible to relinquish that choice and to just let the day fill it with whatever it will. A big problem, though with going that route is that all kinds of junk can be dumped in my cup – anger…apathy…bitterness…envy…lust…revenge…need I go on? And more often than not these things will leave a residue in my cup.

In the past when I’ve made chocolate milk, sometimes the chocolate syrup sticks to the side of my cup even with lots of stirring and scraping. Now what was in my cup was very good but if it is not cleaned properly the residue that was left will still be there the next day when I go to use my cup again. So unless I take care to clean my cup, each day’s residue will continue to accumulate and before too long things begin to taste funny. If I’m not careful it can even begin to affect my health.

That’s one way I can go about being a cup but is not the only way. I am a cup who knows its Maker! Those individuals who make things usually know a great deal about their care. God made me and who better to help me care for myself?

Each morning now, I start off clean – no accumulating residue to mess things up. And each day God fills me. He fills me with himself and all the good things that make Him who He is…love….patience…forgiveness…purity…devotion…joy…and boy, could I go on! And He doesn’t just fill me a little, His fill is to overflowing! It is clean and pure and whole and it fills my every need. And my overflow can’t help but splash those around me – some get a little sprinkle but if they get close enough they might just get drenched! What could be better than that!?

There’s a song that comes to mind that communicates these thoughts so clearly – “Fill My Cup, Lord.”

Like the woman at the well, I was seeking
For things that could not satisfy.
And then I heard my Savior speaking—
“Draw from My well that never shall run dry.”

     Fill my cup, Lord; I lift it up Lord;
Come and quench this thirsting of my soul.
Bread of Heaven, feed me till I want no more.
Fill my cup, fill it up and make me whole.

There are millions in this world who are craving
The pleasures earthly things afford.
But none can match the wondrous treasure
That I find in Jesus Christ my Lord.

So my brother if the things that this world gave you
Leave hungers that won’t pass away,
My blessed Lord will come and save you
If you kneel to Him and humbly pray—

Words & Music by Richard Blanchard

Lord, fill me this day. Use me as You will. Help me drench those around me with all that You are! Amen!

Who Am I to Judge?

Yesterday, Father, I was reminded of Your grace. I saw a friend who because of very poor judgement and then yielding to temptation met with some life changing consequences. Another friend was astonished that they would show their face again. Although what they did was wrong and they were judged fairly, all I could feel for the individual was compassion. Who am I to judge? I have not yielded to similar temptations but I have, throughout my lifetime, yielded to many sordid ones of my own.

I know my friend strives to follow You and I get the impression that it’s somewhat new for them. If You – the ultimate Judge – have forgiven them, why shouldn’t I? Not one of us is any better. Every one of us has done things to separate ourselves from You. And no one is exempt from Your mercy and forgiveness.

Lord, I pray for my friend and myself. May we remain strong in You this day and in the days to come. May we be able to cast off that which so “easily entangles.” (Hebrews 12:1) and cling to You, our Savior and Friend. Thank You, Lord, for Your love. Thank You for Your grace. Amen.

Built on Rock

Today is the beginning of a new year (For me at least!) So Father, I would ask for Your help in making this a year in which we grow closer together. I realize that You are putting forth Your all. I would ask that You would enable me to give You every part of everyday – guide me. Help me to listen and act according to Your will. There is no better way!

Titus 1:9 (<<click here)

Lord, I am so grateful for the solid foundations that You have given me to build my life upon. You of course, are the rock upon which everything else is built. Because of the wonderful gift of salvation, You have extended, I am who I am today – praise Your holy name!

I have every reason to have “a strong belief in the trustworthy message”– that is the Good News of the forgiveness of sins because of Your sacrifice.

As I continue to prepare for the awesome responsibility of leading Your children, please guide my thoughts, fill my heart with Your love and continue to draw me deeper into fellowship with You. May I be the encourager that I need to be and may I show those who don’t believe in You the error of their ways in a loving manner. Enable me to be like You when I interact with those around me wherever I may be.
