Angles in Their Place

Thank You, Father, for enabling me to get as much as I got done yesterday. It was a struggle not being able to concentrate and then feeling nauseous. I only got stuff done with Your help.

Hebrews 1:5-14 (<<click here)

Lord, I am grateful for Your provision and a portion of what You have provided is Your holy angels to help us along our way. They work alongside us to accomplish Your will. They are a great asset but Your Word clearly states that we are top dog of Your creation. We are the recipients of salvation because of Your awesome sacrifice – only because of You can we stand in Your presence. And You, Lord, stand above us all. You are God!

And that is how it should be but we, the created, like to think of ourselves too highly and put emphasis where it doesn’t belong. We lift up and worship creation in lieu of the Creator. The recipients of this letter of Hebrews did just that and the author very succinctly shows them, from scripture, the error of their ways.

Even in our culture we have a tendency to place a little too much emphasis on angels. They are powerful and beautiful creatures. But our fixation borders on worship and that is a line not meant to be crossed. They are created beings made to serve and worship You. You also use them to minister to us. Help us to keep things balance as You intended. You are sovereign. You are Lord. Praise Your holy name!

Cannot Be Chained!

Father, thank You for the ability to get so much done yesterday. Preparations for Sunday are almost complete. I would ask that I and everyone that will be in attendance would be open to hear Your voice, to listen to what You have to say and to act as You call each of us.

2 Timothy 2:8-10 (<<click here)

Lord, in this passage Paul once again proclaims the Gospel – the Good News – that You came to this earth to set things right.

You came to make it possible for humanity and God to be in right relationship – to tear down the wall of sin that separates us. And only because You gave Yourself in Your entirety – giving Your very life! – was this accomplished. Praise Your name!!

Paul may have been in chains for his proclamation but he made it very clear that the word of God cannot be chained.” v9b Humanity tries to control it, tries to tie it down, tries to limit it, to box it in. But, praise to Your, O Lord, it “cannot be chained”! We have fought against Your word from day one, but it has never been conquered. You and You alone, have been victorious. And because of it humanity has found its salvation – only in You!

Thank You, Lord, for loving us in spite of who we are. Thank You for believing in us and seeing who we were meant to be. Thank You for sharing with us Your strength and wisdom and tenacity so that we, too, can be victorious! AMEN!

Nailed to the Cross

Father, thank You for this day, yesterday we will put behind us. I struggled with things, some of which I brought right away to You. Others I dwelt on and shouldn’t have. Help me subdue my critical nature especially when it not constructive or uplifting. Help me to be more attuned to You this day – guide and direct my thoughts and action so as to glorify You.

Colossians 2: 11-15

I am so grateful, Lord, that You and You alone provided me with the wonderful gift of salvation. We both know that sin can still trip me up (see above!) but it does not defeat me, it may have the upper hand in a battle here and there but because of You the war is won. And because of my relationship with You I am a conqueror as well! Because I have embraced Your wonderful gift my “sinful nature” has been cut away. Sin can still influence me to a certain point but it does not control me. I am not blinded (or blind-sided) by sin. I clearly see it for what it is and with You by my side it is defeated. I give You praise for forgiving “all [my] sins.” And for “canceling the record of the charges against [me] “ and by taking it “away by nailing it to the cross.”

You get all the credit. Only because of You can I live a life of victory over sin. Help me more and more to stand firm in Your strength. Help my love for You to grow more, and more every day and for that to persuade every aspect of my life.

Why I Do What I Do

Good morning, Father! Each of these mornings proves your faithfulness. You wake me up at just the right time. Thank You for caring about me so much. Help me to draw closer to You through our time together and throughout the day. Strengthen my resolve to not yield to the things that take me away from You. Forgive my weaknesses. Help me to focus on You.

Philippians 3:1-3 (<<click here)

My study Bible* sums up this passage well by stating “…don’t think that you will satisfy God by feverishly doing his work. God notices all you do and will reward you for it, but only if it comes as a loving response to his free gift of salvation.”

When it comes to my responsibilities in preparing for worship services I would say I work feverishly, diligently, even doggedly, it is very important to me that I do so. But…do I do it “as a loving response to Your free gift of salvation” to me, Lord?

I think my overarching mindset is that I allow You to guide me in what I put into our worship services but I have to admit that I do not consciously ask for Your direction very often. The element You added this last week as a call to worship for Pentecost was very meaningful to me and others (Thank You!) Help me to seek out weekly what You would have us do. You know what will impact us. You know what will touch our hearts and draw us closer to You. Help me to be sensitive to listen, then to act on Your guidance.
