Father…I know the answer but I must ask, “How do You do it?! How are You soooo patient?!” And in this instance, long-suffering describes it much more pointedly. I know it’s because You love me but maybe the better question is, “How do I do it?!” I try to tap into Your reservoir of love but me, myself and I get in the way! Help me, Father, I need You to be “greater and greater” as I “become less and less.” (John 3:30)

Matthew 27:35-44 (<<click to read the passage)

Many things in life seem to change but wise old King Solomon really had life pegged.

That which has been is that which will be [again],
And that which has been done is that which will be done again.
So there is nothing new under the sun.
Ecclesiastes 1:9

One of the greatest and most obvious things that has not changed one iota is the attitudes and mindsets of humanity.

39 The people passing by shouted abuse, shaking their heads in mockery. 40 “Look at you now!” they yelled at him. “You said you were going to destroy the Temple and rebuild it in three days. Well then, if you are the Son of God, save yourself and come down from the cross!”
41 The leading priests, the teachers of religious law, and the elders also mocked Jesus. 42 “He saved others,” they scoffed, “but he can’t save himself! So he is the King of Israel, is he? Let him come down from the cross right now, and we will believe in him! 43 He trusted God, so let God rescue him now if he wants him! For he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’”

Would it be any different today? Not a bit. As you read the text, it just oozes with self-righteousness, arrogance and an “I told you so” mentality. It may seem crass but he makes me want to vomit! They were just so full of themselves and because they now had the upper hand they reveled in their supposed victory. But nothing could be further from the truth.

They had not won…they lost and in a huge way. And it wasn’t just their conquering Jesus which was not victory what so ever. It was defeat They had not just lost the “competition”, their very souls were lost and they were oblivious. I pray that some came to the realization of the Redeemer before they passed from this life.

Lord Jesus…Savior…Redeemer, keep my mind fixed on You. May I love You with all of my heart, soul, mind, and strength. (Mark 12:30-31) Amen!
