Father, this has already been a full day and there is more yet to come. Bless this time that we have together. Guide my heart and mind.

John 18:25-40 (<<click here to read the passage)

“What is truth?”

That was Pilate’s retort after his discourse with Jesus about Him being “King of the Jews”.

Jesus had closed with the statement,

“You say [correctly] that I am a King. This is why I was born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth [who is a friend of the truth and belongs to the truth] hears and listens carefully to My voice.” v37b AMP

And Pilate responded “scornfully,” the Amplified Bible says, with the statement,

“What is truth?” v38a

Pilate seems to have thought as many do today. What is truth? I have my truth. You have your truth. It’s all relative. We all believe what we want to believe. The problem with that particular take on things is that we avoid absolute truth.

Absolute truth is something that is true at all times and in all places. It is something that is always true no matter what the circumstances. It is a fact that cannot be changed.

I can guarantee that even now some are frowning. Especially in our culture, we don’t like – no…we despise! – being told what to do, or think, or be. “I’ll do what I want! …when I want! …and how I want. And no one can tell me different!”

If we hold that all truth is relative…if we believe that truth is whatever the majority of people agree with, then we’re in trouble.

My study Bible goes on to say,

When there is no standard or acknowledgment of truth, there is no basis for moral right and wrong. Justice becomes whatever works or whatever helps those in power. In Jesus and his Word we have a standard for truth and for our moral behavior.

Remember back in John 14:6 when Jesus said,

“I am the [only] Way [to God] and the [real] Truth and the [real] Life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” AMP

Don’t be like Pilate. Don’t be like so many others.

What is truth? Jesus, our Lord and Savior, and all He said and did! His very life is an example for us! Be like Jesus!
