I had in my mind to sit with You earlier today, Father, but this is where it has landed. I humbly come before You. May my time with You be fruitful. Amen.
Matthew 27:1-10 (<<click to read the passage)
I am utterly amazed at how many prophecies Jesus fulfilled in His lifetime! I know I have read (or heard) this passage numerous times in my life but tonight the prophecy stares me full in the face.
9 This fulfilled the prophecy of Jeremiah that says,
“They took the thirty pieces of silver—
the price at which he was valued by the people of Israel,
10 and purchased the potter’s field,
as the Lord directed.”
My Life Application Study Bible New Living Translation tells me that “in Old Testament times, Jeremiah was considered the collector of some of the prophets’ writings, so perhaps his name is cited rather than Zechariah.” For the quoted passage is most closely associated with Zechariah 11:12-13.
12 And I said to them, “If you like, give me my wages, whatever I am worth; but only if you want to.” So they counted out for my wages thirty pieces of silver.
13 And the Lord said to me, “Throw it to the potter”—this magnificent sum at which they valued me! So I took the thirty coins and threw them to the potter in the Temple of the Lord.
We most definitely have free will – each of us chooses innumerable things throughout our lifetimes and God in his infinite wisdom and omniscience knows the host of possible outcomes for our choices. But in the midst of the multitudinous scenarios His will comes through – undeniable, obvious to the max!
It is astounding that God inspired Zechariah to write these words five centuries before the prophecy came to be fulfilled!
Lord Jesus, I stand in awe of who You are and what You have done and what You continue to do. I can’t keep track of things I need to accomplish on any given day yet You excel in managing the entirety of the cosmos with its limitless complexities! I am grateful that though I am but one small point in it all, that You hold me in high esteem and love me with a love so intense that I can barely grasp it!
