What better mindset should I have coming before You, Father…

Create in me a clean heart, O God,
And renew a right spirit within me.

My friend, Geri Rosser, shared her rendition of this Keith Green song from 1979 based on Psalm 51. These are the opening lines. Click here to listen.

As I sit at the desk in our office this evening, Father, I can hear the rumbling of thunder and the pounding rain upon the roof. It’s been a few days since we’ve had rain of any quantity, but it is upon us.

Most of our crocuses have come and gone, and our warmer days have encouraged our daffodils in their ascent from their winter’s rest. The water saturating the ground has played its part. You have made it such that life has an insatiable desire for water – it sustains, it refreshes, it brings life and without it, life comes to an end.

Lord, You are water to me. Psalm 42:1-2 says,

“As a deer longs for streams of water, so I long for You, O God. I thirst for God, the living God.” NLT

Being in Your presence Lord, You softly saturate my soul. You have created me with an insatiable desire for the “living water” that only You can provide – You sustain me, You refresh me. You bring me life – without You, I will surely die.

Jeremiah spoke truly when he stated that we “have abandoned” You, Lord, “the fountain of living water” and we have dug for ourselves “cracked cisterns.” (Jeremiah 2:13) We have traded good for bad – that which causes us to grow for that which leads to death.

Lord, as the old hymn says in a fifth stanza,

“There shall be showers of blessing
If we but trust and obey.
There shall be showers of blessing
If we let God have his way.”

Have Your way with me, Lord, help me to trust and obey, for I need Your showers of blessing.
